Suwannee 3/1/08

I was so excited to be able to post my first report with pictures. Well for some reason I can't get the pics to upload? Anyway I will just post the report. We left Sylvester at 3:30am Saturday and went to my buddy's house in Valdosta and jumped in the truck with him. Rode down to Suwannee, Fl in search of Sand Trout. I have never caught a sand trout but my buddy said it's like sitting on a bream bed. When we got to the boat ramp, I started to get excited. IT IS A cool looking little fishing village. It was exactly what I had pictured. We were in the water by 7:30am. My buddy has a pontoon boat and we bumped bottom a few times leaving the river channel. We had a couple of guys with us in a Carolina Skiff who didn't have any trouble but the pontoon was having major problems. It was wierd because the locals were zipping by us WAY of the marked channel, guess the knew something we didn't. After the initial drama getting out of the channel, we anchored off and started fishing. We were bottom fishing with GULP and tried some cut bait. The gulp outfished the cutbait so we all switched to it. We were getting bumps from a bunch of little fish and hooked a few. We caught a 6 or keepers and decided to move to another spot someone told him about. When we got there...the plot began to thicken! We caught fish almost every cast. After a couple of hours the four of us caught at least 175 sand trout. We didn't keep all of them, just enough for a fish fry. Most of them were 14 to 16 inches. It really was like sitting on a bream bed. I did however notice when the dolphins showed up, the fish scattered for a little while. Something else wierd was we caught an aligator gar?? I have never heard of that! We also caught a few spanish macks. This trip was one that I wouldn't believe if someone told me about it.....you had to be there. We literally got tired of catching fish and we left them biting. Then we went up in the mouth of the river to catch some reds, no dice. We had a very good time abd I can't wait to go again. It was my first trip to Suwannee and my first sand trout. Great Trip!!
