Hooks, etc.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, thanks for the responses to my "New to Town" post last week. I have gotten my feet wet and have been off the lighthouse twice now! We were instructed to use live shrimp and had pretty good success, but we kept losing the damn bait.

So, I have a few (very dumb) questions:

How big are the hooks I should be using with live shrimp?

Also, is there a trick to how I should be putting the shrimp on the hook?

On a different note:

I have heard rumors of rocks off the lighthouse - How far out are they? I only have a 14 ft jonboat with a 9.9. I don't want to die in my search for the mythical rocks.

Thanks!

The rocks are not mythical, they exist. Go to the area charts page and get the numbers for Black rock, grey mare and the entrance to stoney bayou. If you plotted them out you could draw a triangle between them. That is the rock garden. It starts about 2.5 miles east of the lighthouse. Great fishing in there, just not great running.

Live shrimp will work, but be prepared to lose some bait. Pinfish will nibble them off in a heartbeat. If you are going to use them I like using a #4 khale hook under a victimizer cork. I hook them either up from the bottom of the head under the horn careful not to pierce the black spot, or cross ways through the base of the horn. This gives a very natural presentation.

Also try catching some pinfish and using them under corks as well. The bites won't come as often but they will most likely be bigger.
