I'm going to try to replace the impeller on my '85 Evinrude 35 hp for the first time myself. I would sure appreciate any tips from you gear-heads out there on such things as how to disconnect the drive shaft from the lower unit and so on. Thanks. :D

My manual is at the house "it probably don't cover that year no how". The best advice I can give ya "if you plan ta work on it yourself" is to buy a manual for it!!

Once you get the lower unit off, watch this. Shows you waht to look for. Even thought he says that impeller looks ok, I ALWAYS replace them. Cheap insurance.

WHAT WEVANS SAID. IT IS NOT THAT BIG OF A JOB. YA HAVE TO TAKE THE SIDE PLATE OFF OF THE HOWSING, UNSCREW THE BRASS BOLT ON THE SHIFTER, BE SURE NOT TO DROP IT, TAKE OFF THE BOLTS HOLDING THE FOOT , WIGGLE THE ENTIRE FOOT DOWN TILL IT COMES OFF. PULL THE ENTIRE SHAFT OUT , UNSCREW THE IMPELLAR HOUSING OUT, REMOVE THE IMPELLAR AND CHECK THE HOUSING TO SEE IF THE SIDES OR GRUVED OR NOT. IF THE HOUSING IS GRUVED PUT IN A NEW HOUSING WITH THE IMPELLAR. WHEN RE ASSEMBLING BE SURE YOU GET THE WATER PIPES ALLINGED WHEN YA PUT IT TOGETHER AGAIN. GET THE GEAR SHIFTER BACK IN THE SLOT AND TIGHTEN THE BRASS BOLT, BOLT THE FOOT BACK IN PLACE AND YOU ARE DONE. IT IS BEST TO HAVE MANUAL IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE OR HAVE SOMEONE THAT HAS DONE IT HELP YA.

Pa pretty much covered it. The only thing I would add is to leave it in gear, so that you can turn the prop to line up the splines on the shaft when going back together "put a small film of grease on the splines also, to keep them from getting stuck" :-) a film of grease on the housing also, to keep it from starting dry the first time!
