Power Pro woes

Ok, new 10# power pro. I spooled it up about a month ago and have fished with it twice. Had two breaks in a row casting a skitterwalk. Glad it was a top water lure. The line broke right above the knot the first time and then about 4 inches above the knot the second time.

What's the deal? What would you guys do? Strip off a good portion and try again or respool with something else? I have this on a baitcaster for distance casting. I'm thinking about switching to the Sufix braid. What about mono? What do you think?

Suffix braid is the best braid I've used - Power Pro sucks IMO, but you can't beat dark green Berkley Big Game mono in 12 lb test.

Check all the line guides on your rod. Buy Suffix braid.

been using PP since it came out. Never had a problem. It's on my spinning reels and my grouper reels.

First thing to do is press that bottom at the bottom of the reel. THEN release it to cast the Skitterwalk.

When I knot up my line I get those breaks when I put all that momentum on the Skitterwalk and it snaps the line and goes a really long ways.

If you've been around a lot of hard structure, or not using a leader, it could be kind of frayed toward the bottom. Once a week or so I rip off 10-12 feet from the end of all my power pro reels and replace leader. Only thing besides that is about a month ago I had the braid come apart - i.e. the individual strands seperated from each other, and that one broke off about every 3 casts or so. I had to re-spool that one. I'm not sure what exactly caused that but I had been chucking spoons on that one for a few weeks prior with just one cheap swivel. I guess it's possible that line twist back and forth constantly did something to the integrity of it. After about the 3rd tiem it broke I put it aside for the day. Looked at it carefully when I got home and could see on the spool that the line looked funny compared to my other reels. Normally when it's on the reel you can sort of see a distinct uniform pattern on your spool; with the braid that came apart it looked almost like a backlashed baitcaster. You could see sort of 'bumps' in the line where pieces of individual strands slid up and down the other fibers so the line was thicker in some areas and thinner in others.

I have been using PP for a while now and the only problem I have had was on my Shimano Torium with 50lb. test. The line showed stress breaks in it and I was trolling Stretch 30's. I believe that it was a bad batch. Boaters World took it back and ordered me some more. I run about 14-16 inches of 20# Fluorocarbon leader on my inshore stuff just to be safe. Like some advice given here before, make sure that you're line is wet before cinching the knots down. Hope that helps.

Try Stren Super Braid! I've used them all and it's by far the best I've ever used.

I'm a big fan of Power Pro myself. The only problems I've ever had are, Crazy PP knots, and like Mook said the area right by your
leader/swivel will get frayed a lot. I hooked a grouper/snapper once at St Marks reef with an all star rod, with 10lb Power Pro, and
a circle hook once. When the fish came unhooked the only thing wrong was that the hook was straight. Although I may try
some suffix braid on one of my reels just to see how it does. Sometimes change is a good thing.

I'm with BD, check your guides and make sure your not cutting the stuff. If that's not it, I would say bad batch. I use Suffix. I also like the Stren.

Man, Sube's bustin' my chops! I didn't give you a hard time about not paying attention to NoleFF when he was talking during the NFGFC meeting.

With that said, you are the one that is correct about my situation. I stripped off some line and I had a wee little knot that I didn't see when I was fishing. That's a big derrrr....on my part. I'll let you know how that works out now.
