Down again this weekend for my wife and I's annual birthday trip. got in thursday night and enjoyed some great fellowship with friends on the river. the scenery on the river never gets old. woke up to a nice day friday. got out on the water around 11. pretty good wind first thing. we started on the trout and not much luck. very slow bite. switched up for reds and was rewarded immediately. my beautiful bride landed the first fish that was 22 inches. next cast she had another that was a smaller rat. then i got in on the action with a 22 inch trout that wanted to play. all this was going on as that nice little breeze turned into a gail force. the final spot had 4 footers rolling in and i couldn't keep the trolling motor in the water. back out to the trout. picked up 4 more before calling it a day. it was flat blowing by the time we went in around 5. it had blown a very nice tide in. ended up with 12 reds and 10 trout (4 keepers).

saturday was a beautiful day. sunny and 80 degrees with a real light breeze just good enough to keep it cool. had a limit of trout in about 15 minutes with all being 19 inches and then... ........... ............. ........

I woke up.

The trees were bent over sideways on the river and i knew this would be an Apalach shopping trip for the wife. when we headed out of east point and over the bridge i can't ever recal an ANGRIER day. cloudy, spitting rain and the bay looked as if a space ship was about to explode out of it it was so rough. on our way back we were just in front of the tornado that went thru northwestern wakulla county. i was pumping gas and we saw it coming. needless to say, i didn't get a full tank. :o

sunday we watched it rain til about 1:30. i couldn't stand sitting around any longer and asked around and none of the guys would go out with me. :smt012 :smt009 but the wife did. :-D we headed out and as soon as we got to the mouth of the river i knew it was going to be a great afternoon. very quiet, peaceful with a small breeze. the rain completely quit as soon as we got to the first spot. only a handful of boats out. man it was nice. the trout were the most finicky i have ever seen, but we ended up with 7 decent fish. they would only hit a gulp under a cork. not any other grub and only in 5.5 to 6 feet. not shallower and not deeper. they would hit it five or six times like pinfish (we could see them under it) and then you could jerk it real fast several times and they would take it. there was one we watched that must have been 25 inches long or more do this. very odd.

monday was also a nice day out. after the fog lifted we headed out to a low tide around 11 and several boats stuck at the mouth. all the boats were on the right path to head out, but they never got up on plane back in the channel and so it looked like 5 oclock atlanta traffic right past the tripod. anyway, first spot started out slow. wife had two nice blues on topwater which was fun to watch. finally hit the magic depth and had 3 nice keepers. this time, they would only hit a bait (anykind of plastic) twitched along the bottom with no cork. they would hit it, hang on like a pinfish and then you would realize it was a little bigger than a pinfish and you would have a nice trout. no little guys either. all three were nice 17 - 19 inch fish. got tired of the slowness and changed to reds and wife had a little one on the second cast. almost took the rod out of her hand :). we ended up with 10 reds and 3 nice trout for the day. by the time we had to leave the tide was ripping in big time. hated we had to go, but had to get back to Georgia.

Overall, two pretty slow weekends fishing wise. This weekend really took the cake however with the weather.

Good friend Dr. Sexton and I were having a fun and productive day fishing up toward Aucilla on Friday afternoon when the wind kicked up.....and kicked up some more.....and
kicked up some more.....and never slowed down. We tried a creek as a last resort to get away from the wind which proved to be a ridiculous idea. We were casting spoons into the wind
at 45 degrees to where we wanted to fish. Hard to fish a point when you pass it at about 20 knots. :o
We took waves over sides and bow in process of finally getting back into the river. On the way in I could see six boats moving and you could see every wave they hit.
We wound up with six nice trout to 20" and one red and were proud of them!

rhtfish,
i know what you mean. i put the powerpole down once and a 3 footer came over the back and soaked the wife. needless to say, that didn't happen again. :-D heheheheh them reds sure like that rough water however. the harder it blows the harder they bite. :D

i did see a couple of folks that had no business out there. there was one boat that couldn't have been more than 12 feet and i could see them taking waves over the side as they were going in. then there were the kayakers that went into the wind from aucilla to econfina. :o :o i couldn't believe that. those guys had to need a  after all that paddlin'.

We saw 5 kayakers headed from Aucilla to Rock Island...they were so tired they overnighted at Anky and some didn't leave until Sunday. One of the ladies was telling a group of us their
permits allow 4 tents only on Rock Island. When we saw them on the flats they disappeared between swells. Glad they were safe!
