No it planes just fine. But if the foil will keep it from dropping down and digging bottom on the take off in shallow water, it will save the damage on the grass beds. It worked wonders on the skiff I had. I would not mind getting up faster and saving gas.

A hydrofoil/stabilizer plate will help somewhat but if you great lift and hole shotas well as a better ride get some tabs.

my boat had one on it so i do not know how it would do with out one, but my boat has a great hole shot and does not use much fuel. also a hydrofoil is a lot cheaper the trim tabs

How much speed does a Bob's SP make you lose? I am going to order one this week.

If hydrofoils are so good, then why are they aftermarket add-ons? Don't you think if they were that great that the major makers would include them on new motors?
I say this without prejudice, as both my Merc 100 on a Carolina Skiff and an Evenrude 40 on a smaller boat already had hydrofoils installed on them when I bought them used. They are still installed and I probably wouldn't know how to act without them:-D .

My dad has one on his 17' Sailfish and it made a world of difference but my tabs are a God send.

I have one on my 1997 Evinrude 70 and it is factory (optional, but OEM).

Amen to that. I won't pay the price for tabs.

But seriously thinking about a fin on the new boat.

Not beating a dead horse here but if you ever get tabs you won't own another without them.
I would go with the Bobs plate over the Wal-Mart style hydrofoil. Its a little more expensive put Bob knows.
