Has anyone had much success with these lures with trout? If so what models and colors have you found best?

Devil's Horse will stir a commotion dem ole trouts can't stand! I'd say they were a standard with old timers like Gulps are today!
Their oldest color scheme is the "dillinger" with black stripes on white. For trout I'd suggest the brighter colors.
I also like the smaller version for spinning gear. Good Luck and give us a report!

Thanks . That info will give me a good idea of what to buy. They're too costly just for tackle box decoration. Are all these colors floating or are some suspended and deep diving?

Some of much older versions were sinkers...they're very expensive
collector items now. I have a quite rare 5 treble sinking model that
belonged to my Dad the value of which scares me.

I used to fish the dying flutter which was a devil horse derivative. I bet they 'll still catch fish!! The dying flutter was actually a Heddon lure but very similar to the devil horse. Go to lureexchange.com and see some of these cool older lures. I have a bunch of them still!

All true and correct! I like the dying flutter better myself as it suspends where the devil horses dont. ( Or I ve never seen one that did.)

The Devil's Horse is an old lure that used to work for trout and reds. Now obsolete, if anyone wants to send me any they have left I will ensure they get disposed of properly at no charge.

Used to be one of my favorite go-to lures in white/black stripes, yellow/black stripes, chrome, or bare wood. Bare wood because the paint and hooks don't stand up to reds too well. Especially when they're upper end, slot size or bigger.

Another real good one was (still is, really) the Cotton Cordell Boy Howdy.

I knew a fellow, a long time ago, that used to fish the Boy Howdy for cobia. He used a rather unique retrieve, but it worked. He make his cast to a likely looking piece of structure or a sighted fish, and reel just as fast as he could turn the handle. The resulting explosion would set the hook.

Another one that will stir up some commotion is Luhr Jensen Woodchopper! The body design is a little more hefty and the blades are unique in design.
The midsize version casts well on the flats with casting tackle and the smaller size with lighter spinning gear. I understand it has become a favorite
lure for peacock bass and has long been a favorite for muskie.

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda inherited a tackle box full of these and really hadn't heard much about them. I guess they're a lot like when some of these modern era coaches come up with these unique plays that also worked real well 40 years ago.

I still like the devil's horse for trout. And I forgot about the dying flutter, it is a good topwater plug, too. Still have one in my box but haven't used it in years. It has 2 trebles instead of the 3 the devil's horse has.

So many plugs.....so little time!
