GPS Screen Woes

I threw my handheld gps unit in a tackle bag, and the plastic screen got scuffed. The scuff marks are bad enough to obscure small areas of the interface. Does anyone know of any way to polish plastic and possibly repair this?

nope
But you might want to get some of those Self adhesive screen protectors they make for PDA's. they work good for LCD screens on cameras too.

the ones for a treo fit the screen for the hand held Garmins without much trimming. Think I got 10 of them for like 10-12 bucks

You might get lucky. SOMETIMES, when you put those screen protectors on, they will make the scratches seem invisible. Just depends on the depth of the scratch. With the coating those screens have, any kind of polish would just make matters worse.
You may also try that stuff that repairs scratched eyeglasses if all else fails. If nothing works, The manufacturer will replace it for ya (for a small fee

)

The eyeglass repair stuff does not work on GPS or eyeglasses, except on TV.
Just ask me.

I'm the electronics & atuo acces buyer for a large aftermarket RV acces company

. I get samples all the time. I got a sample of a headlight refinishing kit?... I think.. heck it's in the sample bin... If you want to try it I think it's supposed to bring back the "new" look to your cloudy plastic headlight covers. It might work if you want to try it, but not 100% sure on that. Just PM me with your address and I'll send it to you. If it's a Garmin I may be able to ask a favor for you..... or at least I can try.

I got a favor! Me and a few buddies need use of an RV for about a week. Needs hitch and 2" ball. Oh yeah, and A/C. It gets hot in the Islamorada in June.

Hi
Had the same problem with a portable Garmin GPS, I finally found a solution, Believe it or not BRASSO will take the scratches out of a plastic GPS screen, If you use a buffing wheel, MAKE SURE that it doesn't get hot,, IT WILL MELT!
Brasso on a cotton rag, Try it you will like it.

Talltails - I used to work in a factory cutting and engraving acrylics like Lucite, Acrylite etc. Occasionally our routers would scratch them. If the scratch wasn't too deep, we would take a dremel with a really soft head on it (don't remember what it was called but similar to a car buffer), spin it in one or two drops of brasso and VERRRRY lightly spin it on the surface. It will wear down the plastic around the scratch so that it's uniform enough. VERY important not to apply any pressure to the plastic with the dremel. It will melt it like Ybnormal said. Also, I agree with his post - sometimes we could do it with a lint-free cloth. It's just important to use a very small amount of polish and hold the dremel so light it's like you're trying to keep them from touching. I would try with a cloth first and use that as a last resort as you will damage it much worse if you don't get the contact ecatly right, but we found it to be very effective on our acrylics when done properly.
