My dad and i left Beachton with 2 other boats this morning around 5:45.There wasn't much water moving most of the day which made it hard to fish my shallow areas. Finally around 10:00 i went in shallow throwing the SUPER SPOOK .I was walking the dog when all of a sudden i see this huge trout engulf my lure with it sideways in his mouth,he rips out drag and we both know this is a pig. Finally i get him close to the boat and holy !!! he is closer to 30 than 20,he rips drag again i keep the pressure on him and then

he brakes me off 6 inches above my knot and spits my lure.I am fishing 30lb power pro braid which i love but this is the second big trout that has done this to me,any ideas, may never get a chance at one like that again.tied the spook back on and soon caught a 19 incher .My dad caught a nice keeper and i a short red on the spoon. My dad said that he had never caught anything on a spoon so i tied him one on and headed into a creek .Soon i heard him and his drag yell and the fight was on.He landed his first red on a spoon and wasted little time catching his second. That made the trip

.

We pulled out and headed to 4 to 5 foot water making several drifts picking up 4 more keepers, several shorts and a cobia.Called it a day and headed home.

Sounds like a good day with Dad. I had one of those myself yesterday. I've only heard of braided line breaking like that one time, Dad had a big bass break spiderwire one time. The powerpro should'a held him. You'll get him next time.

great catch. a couple of suggestions on your power pro. i love the stuff and fish it a lot. however, i only fish it when i am fishing for something big like snook, tarpon or bull reds or fishing around stuff that breaks you such as oysters, rocks or mangroves. i never fish power pro on the flats when we are just trout fishing. i always use 12 lb mono. first it is much easier to fish than braid when you are popping corks and when you hook a fish it has a lot of give.
you have to remember that braided line has almost NO stretch. that means everytime the fish makes a run, it is ripping the hole in the mouth from the hook bigger and bigger. not a big deal with reds cause there mouth's are so tuff. but trout have super soft and thin mouths and if you are fishing braid and catch one, it is very very hard to land a big one because of all the ripping the no stretch line does to there mouths. so to combat this, you tie on a 15 lb leader (i like p line b/c it is very durable but has good stretch) of about 18 inches and then tie your lure to this. i would never ever tie any lure no matter what you are fishing for or cover you are fishing around straight to the braid. always use a leader.
the only reason it breaks by the way is because you have a knot or cut in the line. another reason to use a leader is b/c you can see any flaws in the leader on mono and it is very hard to see them on braid. for instance, when you are riding around watch those treble hooks beat against your rod and your line. you will see how you get bad places in it. also, braid cuts into ceramic guides so always check all of your guides on your rods. if you fish braid a lot, get a rod with titanium or zirconium guides.
just a few tips. hope they help and keep up the great catching and great reports.

Sorry to hear about the fish; but, an otherwise fine day. I've recently had the same problem. Broken line about 6 inches above the knot to the leader. Has happened three different times, luckily all on very small fish. Line was Suffix braid. All on the same pole. I'm pretty sure I've got a bad eye that's cutting the line. Might be something to check on yours.

Tough luck for sure on the PP breaking on the big trout! There's always lots of possibilities but I would have to suspect a damaged
area in the line. #30 PP is some strong stuff that will withstand about 55-60# straight pull according to some testing. I use 10-15# PP
for everything but with 8-12" sections of 20-25# fluorocarbon attached with a uni-uni connection. Strangely enough, when
something gives its always on the terminal end. Who knows!
Let me know where you hooked him and I'll try to catch him for you this weekend!
