I have dual watch capability so I moniter both 14 and 16. I try to get a radio check on 14 shortly after I get out just to make sure I can transmit. I stay off 16 as far as transmitting. Coast Guard doesn't appreciate it and I sure wouldn't want someone breaking in if it were me the Coast Guard was trying to help. :D

You are required to monitor 16 at all times. 16 is for hailing and distress only. You can call someone on 16, but switch to an alternate freq to talk.

I stay on 16 as I was under the impression that everyone was suppose to. I stay on 16 for hail and emergency, and normally switch over to 14, 68 or 18 to talk. Might explain why I'm never able to pick up folks from this site when I'm out. I always make the call on 16 first.

You are right CS, you are required to monitor 16 at all times. I'll normally put the vhf in dual mode and monitor 16 and 68, or 16 and 9.
