Anything good to be said for 'em? They seem to be cheap (~$100) but what's their range compared to a mounted radio with a whip antenna? Anything close? Are they mostly rechargeable or just dry cell battery operated? Thanks! :-)

Most are rechargable  a handheld is lucky to reach 5 miles "transmitting" and a mounted will reach about 20+ miles "with a decent antenna" A handheld is good for a backup or some not straying far at all from land  if you're going a mile or two offshore, you need a mounted one :smt004

I use a Westmarine one with rechargeable bat. is waterproof and has worked fine for a little over 2 years and many dunkings. Like Wevans said though, anything other than inshore...get a 25W radio. VHF's are all about antenna height
