GULP Question/Observation

I see GULP packs on the sides of the road, and when I do I usually stop and see if there's anything in them. Hit pay-dirt one day last week. Found one with three GULPs in new penny. Got home and opened the pack in the kitchen.
"Here, Honey, smell this."
"Ewww, take that outside and don't ever do that again!"
So we, Herself and I, go after trout yesterday and that's what she wants to use.
She didn't catch any trout on them, but we didn't catch many trout on anything else, either. And the ones we did catch were small...Anway.
That got me thinking. How edible are these things? Did I just beat the 'coons and critters to this pack, which is why all the other packs I see are empty? If they get eaten, do they digest?
