What kind of boat wax do you guys use? I was told that a standard car wax will cause fiberglass to yellow because it seals out the air and fiberglass neesd to breath? I never heard that but I have never had a white boat either.

It depends on the condition of the gel coat. Oxidized finishes do require a different wax. First, I remove the oxidation with a lite cutting compound and high speed polisher. Then, follow up with a foam pad glaze cleaner polish (this also removes any swirls caused by the polisher). Next, is a wash, followed by the final coat of wax applied with a 16# Gem orbital polisher. Alot of times I use the same wax that I use on airplanes which is Ardex 4210 Stereo-Glaze #1. I do have pure carnuba waxes that I use on cars that work just fine on certain gel coat finishes too.

Personally, I've never heard of using standard "car wax" causing fiberglass to yellow. Maybe if the wax was not buffed out properly. I have seen where guys have put "car wax" on a boat with a shotty finish and the gel coat literally absorbed the wax causing a slight color distortion. Cheap "car wax" might cause anything to turn yellow, but I've never experienced it in 10 years of detailing boats. Hope that helps.....

Dolphinatic, I took your advice and put some expensive car wax on it. It is shining like a new penny! And Dubble, thanks for that advice too. I will have to remember that!

Glad it worked for you    .....also, one of the better "car waxes" you can buy local is Meguiars #26. It's a really good all around wax and I use it on boats ocassionally, especially center consoles areas.

Dolphinatic, I used Meguiars #26, glad I made the right choice. I have a black truck and it seems to do better than any other wax I have used. Thanks again

I use Collinite 925 wax & the 920cleaner if I have an area thats dull or stained. Best I've ever used and it last. Its not cheap but a bottle goes a long way.
