Left the cabin at 5:30 this morning and headed to Jerrys. Ran into JT , hogging up all the sandwiches
. Spoke with Steve for a minute, got my crews' goodies and headed to St Marks. Ill be the first to say the Rotary Clubs put on a fine event.Everything was ready and they had enough food for an army or two. Met Angela and her daughter Sara at the lighthouse and off we went. I am sure of one thing. If you ever go to St marks and try to load/unload a boat by yourself, every idiot in the northern Big Bend will be there. I actually counted a man with two grown men standing in the middle of the ramp directing him, back and pull up a john boat on a trailer 13 times. He finally got it into the middle of the ramp, where no one else could back in, and then they proceeded to unload everything but the motor and a.c. compressor from the truck and into the john boat. First time I ever saw four coolers in a 14ft john boat with a 9.9hp motor.
. Anyways, got in the water, loaded my crew and headed to spot number one. After a few lessons in casting, short reds and short trout were the menu for the day. Fished around and around and around. Wound up with one 18" trout, but had a great time and cant wait til next year. We had to run in about 11:45 because of rain and lightning. Of course, got to the ramp and more dummies at the ramp. Total train wreck. I saw Mojo and Mook at the ramp and they were the only people who loaded in less than five minutes. They said they had a rough morning of it,too. They were gonna stay and try and make it happen for the afternoon tide. I guess I should have hopped on the boat with them for the afternoon but Ill tell yall about that in a minute. My crew were good sports about the lack of fish and enjoyed the boat riding just as much. On a funny note, Sara, my event crew member, was sitting on the leaning post when we took off. I told her to hold on and told her to let me know if we needed to slow down. I was running about half throttle and she said, "I thought this boat would be fast. " I asked if she wanted to go faster, and she said yes. Hammer down, BB style. I looked around to her awaiting a smile or a gasp, and she says" Is this all this boat will do???" I folded my arse up and put it in the console for safe keeping!!
Anyways, we got off the water and I was itching to go hit some big trouts and the afternoon tide that was gonna move several feet of water.I saw some activity on the radar, but it was mostly just rain and I talked to my buddy that was fishing arounf Panacea and he said it had passed. I called Ol' CC cause I knew he was die hard and would go brave the elements with me. I even tried to sell it to him by talking sweet in his ear about topwater and huge trout. He turned me down to go home and lay around and drink some beers.
I think he must of had a lady friend awaiting. I was heart broken so I went home and hopped on the tractor. I mowed at the farm for 6 hours this afternoon. Thanks buddy, every time I blow my stuffy nose from all that dusty azz mowing and as I take another allergy tablet, Im thinking Dang CC, we could of put some pig trouts in the boat....
All in all, a wonderful day on the water with some special people and if you guys have never done this before, step up next year. Youll make a difference and an impression on a person for the rest of their lives, just by sharing something you already love. The mom, I bet took 50 pictures today and had the biggest smile all day. She is to send me some of the pics and Ill post them asap. Oh and CC, I had you sweating didnt I?? I know you didnt think I was gonna post the story I told you today , did you???? That once in a lifetime event is not for public viewing!!!
