I was wondering what y'all use in your 4-strokes. And perhaps why you use what you use. Yammy Owner's Manual I read just said to refill with 4-stroke outboard oil. It seems there's a relatively new specification called FC-W (Four Cycle -Water) for 4-strokes which is the oil specification for 4-strokes (similar to the long standing TC-W3, Two Cycle - Water 3rd variation). I'm mostly interested in a 100% synthetic (like AMSOIL FC-W 10W-30 or 10W-40) rather than the standard mineral base oils (non-synthetics). Yet, if there's something synthetic and way cheaper than the $10+ per quart stuff like AMSOIL I'd like to know. I realize some brands in the past (and still do) have recommended their automotive 10W-30 100% synthetic for marine 4-strokes. I'd appreciate any and all info. y'all would care to share on this. What outboard do you have?

I had a Yamaha 115 4 stroke. I used Yamaha 4 stroke oil. It was about $6 a quart. $30 for 5 quarts. If you went with the Amsoil, at $10 a quart, you're talking $50. Thats a difference of $20, once a year. Amsoil is probably the best synthetic out there.

It's a Yammy EFI. I don't see any Yamalube 100% synthetic. Their current 4-stroke mineral base outboard oil (FC-M 10W-30)is close to the price of AMSOIL FC-M (outboard 4-stroke oil, not auto oil). I've used AMSOIL before in my cars/trucks but remember it wasn't all that easy to buy it. Had to look up a dealer at their residence, order and pick-up at residence or have delivered to my place by UPS/FedX. Online it was order, pay dealer, pay UPS/Fed/X, pay State Tax, pay fuel sir-charge and wait to get oil from a warehouse in Orlando. Often, local shops that stocked AMSOIL had it for oil changes and not for resale alone. I'm just saying. Thanks!

I told ya where ta buy it just call Frankie at the Orange Ave Car Quest and ask if they have it in stock "I use the auto oil and have had no problems", if they don't have it, he will get it I'm about ta get another case of it, so ya better hurry before I buy all they have in stock

Yeah, I heard you -- and thanks. But, as I said I'm interested in both 100% synthetic AND FC-M. If you go to AMSOIL site you'll see where they bad mouth using auto (API SM/CF) and why (go there and read why). They are pushing their FC-M oils that are 100% synthetic base oil improvements to such as Yamalube mineral base FC-M and other brand oils. Down side of AMSOIL FC-M is that it's high as a cat's back. I was hoping to find a much lower price brand of 100% synthetic FC-M, but so far no one has mentioned one. Maybe there are none at this time although I'm hoping someone knows of one. One can learn a lot by asking.

When I had my Suzie 200 4 stroke I used Mobile 1. Changed it every 100 hours and it was fine. The dealer said I could use any motor oil I wanted and they actualy Castrol.

I didn't know you was Muslim? Where are your synthetic oil wells located?

Thanks, again! Yeah, I saw some Royal Purple yesterday at Wally*World. What exactly do you mean by "marine oil?" FC-W? Did you go to the AMSOIL site and read about them NOT recommending any "auto" (API spec.), even their own, oil for outboards AND pushing their FC-W 10W-30/10W-40 oils instead? Just curious about some of the "snake oil" thangs about motor oil! I got a ton of stuff from the "makers" of lube oil and haven't gotten it sorted out. There're two thangs going on -- "da science" and "da marketing." AND, no "referees" to tell ya which is which. In a field that's HIGHLY hyped da facts ain't easy to come by. I figger if I gotta put somethin' in a motor, it might as well be a good product and as cheap as possible (but just which one?).

So, we're down to your real question. "What oil should I use?"

This is, by no means, something new with 4 strokes. This marketing debate has gone on forever about outboard oil. If you ask the manufacturer of your, or any outboard, they'll tell you to use their oil. If your outboard is still under warranty, and you use their oil, there won't be any oil related questions if you have a warranty issue.

I was attempting to get as much info. from as many different sources as I could and to use that as a basis for me to decide on the real question. I was surprised that Yamaha's owner's manual (the one that came with the motor) just said, replace oil with a 4-stroke outboard oil. With that "jaw-dropper" I started the search. I saw from a Yamalube brochure that they had a recommended FC-W mineral base outboard oil (no synthetic). AMSOIL says don't use auto oil, even theirs, but to use their (of course) relatively new FC-W 10W-30 or FC-W 10W-40 outboard oil. Mobil 1 recommends their auto API MS/CF 10W-30 (they presently have no FC-W outboard oil on the market and won't say if they're planning on introducing one -- I'd guess they are). Folks on here have given me their views about "what oil" and I appreciate it! The jury is still out. What oil you use in your "snake?" Or was it you who mentioned Yamalube FC-W? I have used the AMSOIL auto oil in mine for nearly 1400 hours and have seen nor heard any ill affects from doing so I am sure that the extra addatives that they add to marine oil does some good I just have never bothered with buying it "I buy oil by the case"

Maybe AMSOIL will tell ya you need to keep ya in-shaw-ance paid up! It's THEM saying not to do it! I too buy by the case or in 5 gallon jugs to save a little money. If being a tight-wad buys me and extra beer a month -- I'll do it! 'At's jus' da way I am! An' even a monkey can drain and refill oil -- seen it done many times on TV. I figger I'm almost as smart as a monkey! I'm not so sure about some on heah! But ALL are friendly and helpful at least to me!
