16% Property Tax Increase

In case you haven't heard, Leon County Commissioners just voted this past week to increase property taxes by the largest amount allowable by state law. The initial vote on a motion by Cliff Thaell was 6-1 with Ed Depuy being the only vote against the increase. This all but eliminates the little bit of relief offered by Amendment 1 to home owners with homestead exemptions.

Business owners and rental property owners will feel a larger increase as we are not protected by SOH or the homestead exemption. Landlords will be faced with absorbing the extra expense or passing it on their renters who are mostly people who cannot afford to buy.

AND...commissioners also voted to lift the hiring freeze, travel, etc. It is a staggering development. It is utterly ridiculous to suggest that these decisions have anything to do with the quality of living. Many of us voted against Amendment 1 because it did not go far enough and we expected that our "leaders" would find other means to fund pet projects and buy votes.

Send a message immediately to our elected "leaders". Call or e-mail or do both. Our county commissioners:

John Dailey 606-5373 daileyj@leoncountyfl.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ed Depuy 606-5369 depuye@leoncountyfl.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bryan Desloge 606-5374 deslogeb@leoncountyfl.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bill Proctor 606-5361 proctorb@leoncountyfl.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bob Rackleff 606-5365 rackleffhsd@earthlink.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Jane Sauls 606-5372 saulsj@leoncountyfl.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Cliff Thaell 606-5377 cliff@leoncountyfl.gov" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Letters to the Tallahassee Democrat editor would also help.

Remember to mark July 22nd on your calendar.

We need to fill the County Commission Chamber that night.

But they also doubled the homestead excemption, so this will most effect 2nd home owners and businesses. The small business man is what keeps the country rolling and now they want more of his moeny in these trying times. Just do like the State Patrol and SAY "We are ambushing speeders for safety". Yet they never give you a safety pamphlet, just a $200 ticket. And why do they hide if they want folks to be safe? No I do not have any speeding tickets.

I really like living in Wakulla County 6 miles from the water. We only have 39k people and over 9 state patrol men and we live 35 miles from the interstate. Interesting! I see fewer state patrol in Tallahassee.

I digress.

Suber is right- your average home owner with homestead exemption will not feel this much.
If you own investment property or a 2nd home it will impact you.

I see no reason for the increase knowing how much revenues have increased with property values.
We all really need to call- even call and thank Ed Depuy.

lower cost of living and higher quality of life offset gas prices, just saying. Live waterfront in Georgia for what would be the cost of a 3/2 duplex in a questionable area of tally. just saying.

And BB I was in your Cairo store the other day and met your newest salesperson. He seemed like a nice enough fella, said something about you and him being from the same family "Tree"

He tried to sell me Badcocks newest signature line in custom stools. Looks pretty comfortable :smt005

Based on BarHoprs post, I am dissapointed in my local business men. :( That is if it is a true representation of your hiring practices and your merchandise inventory. :roll:

Wolfy is actually or night watchman, sorry he fooled you. and that stool is actually a serving tray. A plate on either side , two hollows in the middle for mixed nuts and the depression on the front is for a cigar or summer sausage holder!!!! :smt004 :beer:
