16% Property Tax Increase
Posted: July 15th, 2008, 9:50 am
In case you haven't heard, Leon County Commissioners just voted this past week to increase property taxes by the largest amount allowable by state law. The initial vote on a motion by Cliff Thaell was 6-1 with Ed Depuy being the only vote against the increase. This all but eliminates the little bit of relief offered by Amendment 1 to home owners with homestead exemptions.
Business owners and rental property owners will feel a larger increase as we are not protected by SOH or the homestead exemption. Landlords will be faced with absorbing the extra expense or passing it on their renters who are mostly people who cannot afford to buy.
AND...commissioners also voted to lift the hiring freeze, travel, etc. It is a staggering development. It is utterly ridiculous to suggest that these decisions have anything to do with the quality of living. Many of us voted against Amendment 1 because it did not go far enough and we expected that our "leaders" would find other means to fund pet projects and buy votes.
Send a message immediately to our elected "leaders". Call or e-mail or do both. Our county commissioners:

Letters to the Tallahassee Democrat editor would also help.
Remember to mark July 22nd on your calendar.
We need to fill the County Commission Chamber that night.
