Hey guys, I am in the middle of a divorce. It is amicable and we seem to get along better now than ever. We have been together 18 years, with no kids(both are 40). I have given up a lot, but get to keep a lot as well. The house, dog and cat for starters. She has always hated the water and fishing. I have not been out in a while. The payments are less than 200 a month. Plese help me set my prioroities straight. I would look good in the eyes of many if I chose to sell it, but I do not have too, it is primarily in my name-Peace, Carlos

thats a hard one ..........NOT!!!!!! ..keep making the payments and keep the boat. You could always offer her half of what you have paid so far minus the interest. If you think it will make people happier. Just my .02

Keep the boat but don't act like you want to. Make it seem like a punishment and she may even make the payments for you.

Goodness....you could never be a divorce lawyer :smt005 You only offer at most 1/2 of the equity and I can bet you the equity right now pretty small compared to the amount paid in. :-D

BTW, Fishsticks, I think this is a trick question :smt004

Very sorry to hear about the divorce. They suck, I know from experience. Even more sorry to hear you re thinking of selling the boat. My time on BB is what go tme throught the tough times. Its funny how easy it is to leave some of the emotions out there on the water. Good luck to you with the decisions you face!

What ever you decide, don't look back with regret........I've had to make tough decisions lately as well and wrong or right, I'm going to enjoy what lies ahead.

For the record, that is one sweet looking Sea Pro !!!!!!!!! I may not use my Sea Pro as much as I would like these days but when I'm in it, it's a type of therapy I can't get anywhere else !!!! Good Luck !!!

The first thing I'd like to mention is that your not a bad person because of a divorce. There is some pretty good advice scattered around in the replies to your post. It can be difficult to seperate emotion from the decision process during the turmoil, but try as best you can to avoid a knee jerk decision. As to your specific question, I would try to consider the following: Were you thinking about selling before the divorce? How much do you use the boat? How much do you (realistically) expect to use the boat in the future (short term say the next year). How much difference would it make to your life style to eliminate the payment (in other words what would you do with an extra $200 per month and would that out weigh not having the boat)? I believe your saying that you don't need to sell because of the divorce, if that is the case you wouldn't need to consider selling because it was specified in the divorce settlement but might need to consider because of circumstances arising from going through the divorce. What your going through is a powerful emotional roller coaster. I wish both of you the best and I can't tell you how fortunate I believe you are that children are not an issue. Good luck

Been there...done that...got the Tshirts! All kidding aside, a lot of excellent points have been made. All I can say is thank goodness no children are involved and everything else (houses, cars, boats, and yes, even plain ole money) is just "stuff." Anyone who has lived long enough knows "stuff" comes and goes. Apologize only once, learn from mistakes (on both sides), understand the legal aspect of divorce is not a moral
judgement, and most importantly, live as if means something! BEST to you!

One other word of advice from experience. Settle everything between yourselves. Then get an attorney to draw up the papers for you. If she wants a 15,000 car, let her have it. It will be cheaper than letting the divorce attorney wolves pit you against each other and taking most of your money for themselves....

Been there, done that........

SINCE I HAVE BEEN MARRIED TO THE SAME LADY FOR A LITTLE OVER 65 YEARS IT WOULD BE HARD FOR ME TO GIVE YOU ANY ADVICE ABOUT KEEPING OR GIVING AWAY (STUFF). I BELIEVE THAT IF I HAD THE CHOICE , AND BEING IN THE SITUATION YOU ARE IN, I WOULD KEEP THE BOAT . I SURE NUFF GET A LOT OF SATISFACTION OUT OF ALL 4 OF MY BOATS, JUST DO NOT GET TO USE THEM OFTEN ENOUGH.

Sorry to hear about your divorce. If you can afford the boat payment, keep it. BB is right, the water will take your troubles away. I can promise you that from personal experience.
