Good times at the Large Pond

My old fishen partner drove over from Savannah. We met and had a great dinner, got in and jammed for a while he's a great Blues man and we haven't played together in years. Got a little rest then off we go we left early and had a good ride down. We off loaded and didn't ride far I told him we would do a bar check and fished in less than two foot in falling water. The check was supposed to be for thirty minutes unless the fish said otherwise. The fish were talking and the plugs were walking. The first twenty minutes I got my answer he quickly changed from the cork & jig rig to a jerk bait that also was not keeping my pace. I tell him where to look and now we are both fishing Trout patterend Skitterwalks. I am getting bit and have a pig Trout and nice Red. After a while he joins in with a Red we both lost a couple of nice fish and landed a few. Josh put too much pressure on a Nice Red and he left with my plug. He changed to Pink and we continued to have some big blow-ups followed by some misses, as well as won and lost battles. After three hours with some real pretty fish on ice we head off to deeper water. I started in eight foot with little to show for it we kept creeping deeper at ten foot we started to get them and caught fish one or two per drift for hours. We lost a bunch at the boat caught some trash and shorts after about three hours we had a respectable box and was ready to ride in. At the ramp I was asked by the camp owner what I had and replied eight Trout 2 over twenty two Reds and one Black. He swore I was lying because nobody had caught more than a fish or two. He had fished for hours and had not one keeper. I know him pretty good he loves to gamble so I offered if they are in the box you clean them if they ain't I'll give you Fifty Bucks cash. He knows me well enough not to take the bet (not that I am such a great fisherman, I just would never give away fifty bucks for no reason). We had caught a lot more than I had expected from the reports i had heard. We had a great time never got to hot and got back at a decent time. What a great visit and nice trip on the way back I got the call we were eating with the kids so I brought the filets he put them on the grill boy what a feast Beer can Chicken grilled fish and veggies and my wife made some Mexican Eggplant dish with some great laughter and desert was Shortcake I was whipped but it was an awesome day. WAM out.

WAM, anytime you catch fish when nobody else is catching much is a great day. It sounds like your topwater strategy paid off, nice fish. Where were you fishing?

I wish I had a strategy, I just poke and hope. I had been told not to come by the camp owner. Had buddies fish Wensday, Thursday, and Friday and had no love all three days they suggested I might want to bring Scallop gear just in case but offered little hope that we would catch fish. I spoke to folks in four boats on the way in or at the ramp the best report was five trout, two with two, and one with none. Proof positive if you listen closley you can hear the fish talk. Keep and open mind and try some different things. One guy said two weeks ago they were crushing them in six foot of water. They put five limits on ice in less than two hours.
