Where to freedive/spearfish?

I am new to spearfishing around St. Marks and would like a few suggestions for places to spear some sheepshead. I have a little 18' flats skiff and would like to do some spearfishing/freediving. Are the rock piles east of the light house and the wreck near the oysterbar a good place to start?

You can't spear on the wreck since it's part of the jetty. Also, the vis would be horrible anyway.

Try any of the close in public reefs like Rotary, Dog Ballard, and St. Marks. They are easily reachable in your skiff on a calm day like we have all summer, usually.

All these numbers can be found on the Area Charts page.

Welcome aboard.

I'll give it a shot this weekend, Thanks!

Edit: What other fish are at the reefs to spear (I just have a Hawaiian sling)?

You can spear mullet, flounder and sheepshead around the rocks and oysterbars east of the lighthouse.

Mullet are trickiest for me. Too many targets at once. :-D

I freedove spots 16-20 ft. and got some flounder this past weekend. The water clarity is getting much better and the water was pretty warm. I have a hawaiian sling also. I fished Dog Ballard and didn't get a thing, but did mark some new spots out there. I have a 17' Tracker and have only run past the birdrack two times so far. For some reason I never really thought about doing it but now I'm dying to get a bigger boat so I can run offshore all the time. I have to pick my days but so far it's been fun. I need to get some dive gear so I can stay down and sneak up on the grouper and snapper.

I am new to spearfishing, and I was wondering if there are any decent spots within a couple miles of shore in this area. So far it looks like the closest spots that y'all have mentioned are about 6 miles offshore. I am hoping to be able to dive and spearfish from my kayak, so I would like to stay a little closer to shore.
