New (?) Boat

See you guys buying these beautiful boats. Got a bit jealous. So I took the big step today. Went to Crawfordville and spent the big bucks. A beauty(?). A 16 foot Herters, Herters?, They went out of business in 1973! Oh well, maybe not absolutely new but she floats. Built in 1959. The ugliest thing I have seen in a while. Went by Lowes and bought a gallon of paint and brushes. Maybe I should have bought a couple of gallons. Got what appears the original trailer. Must have at least ten cracked coats of paint. Conversely the boat has NO paint! Bare fiberglass in most places. I questioned my sanity on the way down and again on the drive back. The wife gives me strange looks. The kid says "Not here Dad!". "The neighbors will start leaving old clothes and bringing covered dishes". Hummm, What do ya' think?

Herter's...man that name brings back memories! For years if I didn't buy it from Herter's it wasn't worth having. I have a nice collection of some of their "copy cat" lures. I keep one of their
catalogs (all covers were the same) on my desk and read it quite often. I love some of Mr. Herter's philosophical writings....he was certainly ahead of his time regarding protecting the
environment!

Unfortunately i am not exaggerating the appearance. it looks very bad. Have been wanting a 15-16 foot boat with a deep vee bow and five foot beam but could not find one. Finally I found an old set of boat plans. Had decided to build. I accumulated a stack of 16.5 foot fir for the build. Saw the ad for this boat. It is almost identical. The boat contains no wood in the structure and is very sound. Fairing, paint and new interior will put it in useable condition. The interior unbolts quickly for patterns. In the next couple of days I will repaint and put in plywood seats. Then on to Eastpoint for a few days. This winter I will do a complete restoration for antique boat shows and general use. I have an old 1970 9.5 hp Johnson in superb shape we will use to putter around. A nice 1970-80's 35-40 hp with tiller is in the near future. Will post photos later today. If you see us behind Saint George Island come by and say "Hello".

Most of that will buff right out.

Good luck with her. I'm sure you'll have her seaworthy in no time. Can't wait to see some later pics.
