I will need a motor in the 40 hp range if I take teh boat. anyone have any feedback on these boats. it is a late 90's model. Alos, I will be looking for a short-shaft motor if anyone has one.

What is your plans salt fresh both? How heavy are you do you usually fish alone or with others? Do you mind getting wet. Where a zip lock bag and you should be fine. (another words they are wet)

I will be fishinf fresh and some salt water. Most would say I am a large person. I would probaly have at least 1 and maybe 2 other people in the boat. Not sure a ziplock would cover much

pay attention to the floor. see if it has any sot spots in it from water intrusion. Even though they say it is a not construction, water will get through the screw holes in the floor. Once water gets in there there is no way for it to get out. Over a long period of time a lot of weight can be added to the boat. A 16 sounds like an awful small boat for 2-3 200+lb fellas.

I'm 220lbs and most of my buddies are close to that.
If it is just two of us the J-16 is great. 3 and it gets cramped.
I would go no less than a 30HP 2 Stroke or a 40 HP 4 stroke.
All in all I love my boat- I always want a bigger, faster one....

I just bought a used 2004 j-16 with 25 Yami 4stroke on it and it goes 16 with 2 guys and fishing gear. I thought that was plenty fast for that little boat. Its a tiller steer.
It can be a wet but then again your skin is waterproof.

Yea mine is a center console with a big bench storage seat.
We carry a lot of junk- Including my fat Butt!
If its rigged simply a tiller 25 is perfect.

If your getting a deal like that then the boat is probably the older model and only good for a 30 hp in a center console and 25 on the tiller. I had one and it had a 9.9 that pushed me alone at 17 mph. The new ones are rated up to 40 hp. I think the 25 is perfect on those boats.

Hello. I have a 98 J16 with a 30 Nissan and stick steering (2 place tandem seating). It will do 30mph (gps) on flat water with 2 average folks, say about 175lbs each, but you have to be careful in turns at that speed.
As previously stated, it's a wet ride in a light chop or more. Fun boat when I use it, which hasn't been much in the last couple of years. The finish was coming off in places on the floor when I got it in '02. I painted the inside with an epoxy marine paint, and it has held up pretty good.
If I had it to do again, I would buy a regular 16 with a v hull for what little inshore fishing I do these days.
Seems like a fair price, but by the time you put a motor on it and a few accessories, you could have quite a bit tied up in it. Be me, I'd wait and find a complete rig. Deals are out there. Just have to wait for the right one.
Good luck with it, either way you go. Q

I just bought a JV-15 and its good for two people. I originally bought it with a 25 HP 2-stroke, but it had serous problems getting up on a plane (i.e. 30 seconds). Top speed with two people (180 lbs + 200 lbs), was about 26 MPH. I swapped the motor out for a 40 HP 4 stroke and now it takes off. I havent had it out with two people yet, but by myself it will do 35 MPH.
