Shop vac scallops...

Post by bman »

We had a ton to clean last night and not a lot of experienced hands.
I broke down and tried the shop vac to suck the guts out...
I have been skeptical but it really works.

Yes the vac was nasty when we were done but a few buckets of clean water rinsed it well and then a bucket of Mr Clean all purpose took the smell away.
If you left it over night it would be :smt078

I tried that once. Never got the smell out, but I didn't use Mr. Clean, I used vinegar and dish washing detergent. I just keep on shucking them by hand now.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

Driving back through the canal toward the public boat ramp at KB, it seemed like every house along the canal was using the shop vac. I wondered if it would have a tendency to pull the scallop out as well.

You loose a few but that is the cost of doing business.... It is really about twice as fast.
We did it assembly line style- Three of us opening shells, one using the shop vac and one getting the meat out.
The best part is you can put unskilled shuckers in charge of the Vac and taking the meat out.
