Bird Racks

What is the purpose of the Bird Racks that occur from South of Keaton up to Dekle Beach? Why were they origionally built and why are they maintained? The question came up last time out and I realized I had no idea.

Bird and fish habitat.

They were originally built during WWII to gather bird poop for fertilizer. Now they just gather birds.

the nitrates could also be used in explosives. Many South Seas Island's bird habitat was destroyed to "mine" nitrates
