Wacissa trip with the Yak

Took today as my "Saturday" and drove over to explore the Wacissa River.
Its been years since I've been there and had almost forgotten what it looked like.
I pulled up just after a rain storm blew through. I had crickets, worms and a handful of little bream spinners and crank baits.
I really wanted to come home with a mess of redbreasts.
Right off the bat I was blown away with the clear water at the boat ramp. It was like fishing in an aquarium.
Image
The fog and clouds were blowing out as I launched
Image
I thought about taking a jump off the high dive
Image
I started casting crickets in the run just off the boat ramp and caught Stumpknockers on almost every cast.
Image
A bit later further down river I started catching Red Breasts
Image
None of the fish were big but they will fry up just fine :lick:

I switched to lures to try and catch some bigger bream but I started catching small Bass
Image
Most were this size but I did bring home 5 keepers. In 2 of the five there was a hole crawfish!

I made my way down to Big Blue Spring... The run into it is beautiful clear water with limestone bottom

As you come into the boil you can see the swim platform and the color change as the water deepens
Image
Image
It was a bit eerie to glide the kayak over the edge and look over 40 feet down to the bottom. It was like I was floating in mid air!
I took the next photo off the swim platform in about five feet of water. Can you see what was on the bottom?

Salamander just crawling along
Image
This last photo was just a curiosity... Limpkins were eating apple snails on this log. They left a pile of the shells unbroken.

It was glorious day- Ive heard this place can be a zoo on the weekend but I only saw two john boats and two air boats. Both were courteous.
Caught about 40 bass and over 50 bream... Took home 5 bass and 15 little bream- nothing big enough to brag about but plenty of fun!

Glad to see the rain did not ruin your day again Barry  I saw some nice bream a few weeks ago in the area by the diving board. I decided to try a dive like in my younger days and completely filpped over when I sprang off the board. I made a nice smack on the back and Raymond thought he was going to have to come get me  Next time you go to Big Blue, take a few crawfish and drop 'em down (on a hook of course) along the grass there on the right side facing the old rope swing and hold on

Great report. I haven't been down the Wacissa in several years. Reading your report makes me want to plan a trip down there again. I always enjoyed the scenery on the Wacissa. It can be very peaceful and makes for a nice day on the water! Glad you got out there!

Barry, looks like the US Flag may no longer be hanging over Big Blue Spring? If it's no longer there, don't know if you got a chance to see the flag while it was up. Can honestly say it was one of my first outdoor adventures after moving to the Lloyd area in 2002 and still one of my favorite memories.
Image

My understanding is that someone strung it over the spring after 9/11. Picture doesn't do it justice as someone did some real acrobatic work to hang it. If any other board member can confirm the story and/or tell what's happened to it (if in fact it's now down), I'll sure be appreciative to learn more.
