NFGFC Meeting Recap - September Meeting

A great time was had by all at last night’s meeting. Steve Taylor (Jumptrout) introduced the officers and reports were given by the Tournament Director and the Treasurer. Chuck Collins and Jeff Trent are currently leading the points race and have a slim lead over myself, John Vickers and Austin Trent. The next club tournament will be Saturday, September 6th and will be held out of the Moorings Marina in Carrabelle. John Vickers will be collecting money until 6:20 a.m.

Mike Scibelli reported that the club has a little over $3000 in the bank and will use most of that to pay for the club Christmas party.

Our first speaker was Tom Wheeler of Custom Detailing. Tom spoke about taking care of vehicle and boat and gave several great tips on cleaning your boat. Tom mentioned several different products that he uses (feel free to write a summary of your speech TW if you want). One of his favorite products was M1 and it is very useful when trying to get tree sap, tar, gum or any other really sticky compound off of your car or boat. M1 can be purchased at Eppes’ Hardware. Tom uses Wool mitts when cleaning the boat because they won’t scratch up a gel coat and are abrasive enough to remove dirt. Additionally, Tom said that purchasing a good chamois cloth really helps when cleaning / drying the outside of your boat. Also, microfiber cloths are the new “hot” item and Tom uses them in the washing process as they last much longer than a cotton towel. Tom talked about using brushes with both soft and hard bristles and said that on non-skid materials on the inside of your boat, it is okay to use a harder bristled brush. However, he would not recommend using one on the outside gel coat of your boat. Tom donated several great prizes to the raffle and all members of the club benefitted from hearing Tom speak last night. Thanks, Tom!

Our second speaker was Capt. Randy Peart. Randy is a local guide who fishes from Econfina to St. George and even guides for the month of May in the Keys. Randy is a big fan of Gulp and says that they are “deadly”. Randy likes the 3” and 4” shrimp and also the 5” jerkshad. His favorite colors are white and new penny. Capt. Peart really likes Mission Fishin’ jigheads and says that the combination of a gulp on a M.F. jighead under a Cajun Thunder is deadly. When fishing shallow water, Randy likes to rig his jerkshads with a Gamakatsu wide gap 2/0 or 4/0 Ty Smith style. A slow retrieve with subtle rod twitches is lethal. Randy uses braided line and likes the 6 lb. test PowerPro.

It was a great meeting as 37 members showed up to hear the speakers. Many great prizes were given away by our sponsors: Polar Bear Coolers, Falcon Rods, South Georgia Outdoors, Custom Detailing, Mirrolure, Advantage Marine, and ShakeLight.
