St Marks Friday 9/5

Day started with high hopes and expections as usual . Put in at Shell Island about 8:30 .Weather at fish camp beautiful..
Got out to the lighthouse and found a pretty good chop on the water. From there down to Grey Mare/ Cobb Rocks it got harder. The water was badly stained and wind steadily increased.
My first cast with a skitterwalk brought a trout strike right at the boat. Nice fish came completely out of the water and missed the plug.... Well I thinks, This gonna be a good morning...Not to be , this was first and last strike I got on a topwater the rest of the day...
After about an hour of nothing I found a pack of stink grubs Jay had left in the boat and started fishing them under a cork...Caught two magnificant sail cats...
About 11 with tide going out and wind not too bad I decided to run out to deeper water and drag a stretch awhile..Headed out to 8 rock but before I got deeper than about 18' the seas had picked up to twos and three plus'.. Then I decided that my boat ain't a bay boat !
Started in slow, like any flat bottomed boat it was rough but boat was real dry.... No problem with spray.
About halfway to Stoney saw a boat hauling the mail coming to me...FWC...Got checked but every think ok cept I didnt have a horn or whistle. Officer gave me a warning but could not have been any nicer...credit to the FWC
I waited till the tide started coming in and headed up a creek with trolling motor. Throwing spoons. grass was packed in the creeks so bad that it was no fishing much of anything..About five I gave up and started in...Had planned to fish Sat morning till about 11 but with weather and grass so bad, I loaded up when I got in.Long time since I had a day as poor as Fri was........
Spent night at Shell Is. since I already had a room and headed out early Sat morning as I had a dove shoot to go to that afternoon.
Fishing didn't amount to much but went to a shoot for the book Sat afternoon..Highlight of the event was my 16 yo nephew put on a shooting clinic..He's as good a wingshot as I've ever seen.
Birds came in as good as I've ever seen for an opening day shoot..We had some sunflowers and millet to shoot over..Birds came in early and we left about 5 to let some feed so we'd have some next week...Nobody had taken any peanuts up anywhere close so that helped the situation..
Think I'm gonna wait a couple weeks and see some good fishing reports fore I try the flats again....
