Friday- Left work a little early and headed down to do a little fishing. Caught some bait with the cast net and it was on. Tried fishing the shallows where we got the bait and caught a decent-sized Flounder. Moved on and set up a drift near the channel for the Lab. Caught a sweet 22" trout. We also got our share of non-game species. Then, it happened. Not paying attention, 1st mate realized that one of the floats was missing so he rushed to man the pole. Suddenly, at about the same time, I (we) see something large darting for the boat and quicky turn away at the boat. What the??? A few seconds later, it jumps out of the water and gives a few shakes. 'POON!!! Of course, the equipment is not quite up to the task but what the hey? The drag is screaming, we're hooting and hollaring, and I fire up the motor to go chasing after it. The Tarpon gives us another acrobatic show before breaking off.
It all happened so fast, we were in disbelief. Did you see that? That thing almost jumped in the boat! High fives abound and we're jumpy, to say the least, the rest of the outing.
Saturday- Went for a leisurely swim at the Wacissa. It wasn't as clear as normal but not near as stained as St Marks.
Sunday- Decided to go for a repeat of Friday. Hit the water about 5:30p. What worked on Friday did not work on Sunday! We were prepared this time with heavier gear but we only got lots of Snots and Sharks. I did manage a keeper trout around 18". It was fun anyway. Water seemed to be more stained than it was on Friday. Friday the wind was blowing from shore. Saturday it was blowing in from offshore.
