Here's an easy crab pattern that should work on the reds and sheepies on the mud this fall and winter.

Materials:

2-6 Mustad 34007
Tan, olive or brown Furry Foam
Lead or bead chain eyes
Round rubber legs (tan or barred)
Deer Body Hair

Steps:

1. Tie lead eyes on top of hook 1/3 back from eye.

2. Cut furry foam in rough shape of crab body. It helps to leave a V-shaped tab at one end. That will be you initial tie down point.

3. Rotate hook and tie in furry foam behind eyes and back to inside of the hook gap.

4. Tie in round rubber legs over top of eye base. I leave the 4 strips together and tie them in at the same time.

Image

5. Fold furry foam back down over inside of the hook shank and tie down just in front of the eyes. Shape the furry foam as needed.

6. Tie in deer hair wing. Stack the tips first then tie in at the furry foam tie down point. Trim the butts.

7. Separate the legs and tip them in red. Done.

These were all tied on 2's. I'd tie on a 6 if I was focusing on Sheepies.

I've had the furry foam in my material box for awhile. Can't remember where I picked it up. May have been the Fly Shop while it was still open. The round rubber legs came from saltwaterflies.com. You can find the foam there. Sportsman's Warehouse may have both materials as well.
