Hey guys, I'm from Pensacola but am heading down to St. George Island for the weekend and would like to do a little fishing. I am planning on bringing my 17' Cape Horn with me. I just need a little help/advice from anyone willing.

Where are some good areas to hit up along the island? Any particular baits working better than others? I'm also looking for a bait store on the island. I have seen a few boat ramps from looking online but was wondering if you guys think I could launch my boat at East/Rattlesnake Cove in the park? If not, would you recommend the ramp at the foot of the bridge on the island?

I have heard that for first timers in the area, navigation can be a bit of a problem. Any tips/advice you guys would have is appreciated. Thanks in advance for any replies.

P.S. Anyone know of a good place on the island to watch college football Saturday night? Thanks.

Only went out of that ramp a couple of times last year with a Carolina Skiff. When you get around the corner stick with the power poles. Once you get to the channel you can turn left and run to the cut. It gets pretty shalow on low tide getting out at that ramp. My niehbor has a place there I caught the biggest red of my life. I doubt they are there yet. Live bait was awesome and I fished jig & cork also. Anywhere there is current moving across a bar should work. We got our shrimp before we got on the island they are much cheaper there.

the grass and oyster bars behind little saint george (just past bob sikes cut) and also further over behind St Vincent should produce some nice reds and trout, especially with these cooler evening temps. live shrimp under a popping cork, whole blue crabs (half dollar size) or bigger ones quartered up will produce in the cut, the monster reds might not be there yet, but there may be some decent size reds as well as some straggler end of season tarpon.

The new ramp at the foot of the bridge is good and your best bet. Most consistent fishing should be had just past sikes cut behind little St. George Island. Look for the grass flats from 1.5 to 3 ft range. Tide will need to be moving for best results. Near high tide, ease up to the shore line and throw top water for reds. Sometimes you will see them busting the mullet near shore so sneak up on them if you see the panic. Take your time and work the entire back side of the island and you will do well. Anything under a cajun thunder for trout will work.

Have fun. St. G is a great place. Wish I could go more than once a year.
