GPS Problem

Model: Garmin GPSmap 76S
Problem: When my GPS gets sattelite reception, and switches to the map, a minute or 2 later, the screen goes blank and has one vertical line through it. The only way to get rid of the line (or turn it off) is to remove the batteries. I've tried replacing the batteries, and it does the same thing. I've had it a while, never had any issues with it, until now. Has anyone had this problem???

You might try looking on the Garmin web site to see if there is any updated software for the unit, and load it. If that doesn't work, call Garmin support and see what they have to say. If that doesn't work, you'll probably be sending it to Garmin for a rebuild.

Strange....mine started doing that Friday. I could "tap" it and it would work better at times. I changed batteries and nothing happened.
It got kind of nasty looking in the battery compartment after floating in the Anky several weeks ago. On closer inspection I found
one end of connector plate in one of the two battery slips had broken off. I slipped it back under the battery post and it started working
again like a charm. I'm going to try and superglue the broken piece back into place without insulating it. Hope that helps!

There is apparently a problem with 1 of the WAAS satellites. Joe K and I had the exact same problem yesterday with 2 different GPS's, both MAP 76S versions.
If you go into the menu and go to setup and turn the WAAS off, it will not crash.

The cost to repair the unit is $99.

Do the firmware update and update to firmware version 4.00. Just did that and the unit has been on for a good 5 minutes without crashing.

Same here. Looks like the update may have taken care of it!

I had the same problem Sat and Sunday at Econfina with my map 76. I went in and turned off the waas on the unit . I dont have or cant find the connector for the computer. Can you buy one separate? I thought my unit had gone bad. Another friend complained about the same problem on his gps that is mounted to the boat.

I only wish I had an excuse to turn it on...
So since its firmware is it something we all need to do?

You should always do the software updates. I guess I let mine lapse.

My Grandad Thomas always reminded me when we had atmospheric problems or anomalies....."never had any of this till the Russians put that damn monkey in space."

This is weird i have a Garmin 168 sounder and this happen to me saturday at Lanark. THe thing came on as we were going out that morning and in about 30 seconds the screen was blank except one vertical line. The unit would not turn off except unpluging the power. It continued that way all day long. When i got home i turn one the unit with the ac power cord inside the house and it worked fine.???

I would suggest you do any firmware updates that are available for that model Hammer.
