11/7 - 11/10 Econ Report

well, it has been a while since i have been able to get down, but i guess the delay was worth it. i was down with my wife and dad on a little family trip for a change. we tried three times to get down in july and august for scallops, and each time we got weathered out. this wknd wasn't looking much better when we left with a cold front coming in and NO tide at all friday and then very little on sat and sun. however, it was the last time we could make it down til spring and the weather turned out to be amazing, the tide was better than expected on sat and sun and the fish were flat out eating.
friday we arrived at our usual noonish time and were on the water around 1:30. the water was already low when we got out and supposed to get lower. it was SKINNY in some of the areas we fished. started out on some spots for reds trying to catch the last of the outgoing. although we must have seen over a hundred fish, none would bite. they were just sitting with their heads in the grass as we trolled around. we were able to pick up 2 on topwater and then picked up 4 trout that were also reluctant to bite, but hit topwater. it was nice to stay out til dark thirty each day to get the most of any high water that we might get to run in on.

saturday rolled around and we decided to head out a little later since it was a little chilly getting on the water around 10:30. we headed east this time for a little change of scenary. we were rewarded right away in 3.5 feet with 10 nice keeper trout and several throw backs. we were able to catch fish on and off most of the morning with a good many shorts also. we then went for some reds and we could just not find anything to the east. back west we went and it was sure nice to have a little extra HP on my new ride (not really new but still seems that way) to get us there a little faster. we were a little late as far as the tide went cause it was pretty low when we got there. we were able to pick up a flounder, a nice trout and 3 nice reds. we then went out for some more trout and picked up a few more bringing the total to 12 for the day and then finished the day with some more topwater reds.
sunday will go down as the best day i have had to this point at econfina. 3 slams, 18 reds, a limit of trout, and some really nice seabass. the day started with a gigantic cluster at the ramp. i saw RHTFISH at the ramp, but there was such a traffic jam, i was just trying to get out of the way and didn't see him the rest of the day to say HI. anyway, out we went. headed east to start the day where we found the trout the day before. nothing at first. then i realized the water temp had dropped to 63 overnight from 69 saturday evening and knew we needed to be deeper. moved out to around 5 feet and caught trout or seabass on every cast for about an hour. however, only 3 keepers to show for it. moved out a little farther into 6.5 feet and picked up some really niced seabass and several keeper trout. had 8 trout at this point and a livewell full of nice seabass. made the trip west to try and get in a few more trout and couldn't find the rockgrass i was looking for. headed for the reds and holy cow it was awesome. we ended up catching 18 reds, 3 flounder, and two trout in an hour and a half IN ONE PLACE. we didn't move more than 200 feet for the entire time. it was crazy. so wrist sore and wanting to go in and visit with some friends that had just gotten back from being out of town, we decided to make one last effort to finish off a limit of trout. i didn't think we would do anything because you could tell the bite had just stopped and the tide had slacked. however, in the first drift we finished off our trout limit with the 6 or 7 left all being between 18 and 20 inches and all happening in about 25 minutes. it was just one of those totally UNEXPECTED days. the reds were lovin the gulps and the trout were lovin the electric chicken SA seasshad. monday morning we were going to fish a few hours before heading back home but were greeted by a 15 mph COLD northeast wind and only a tickle in the river. we decided we had caught plenty and would make it home a little earlier than usual. hope you guys and gals enjoy.

i missed you last trip as well. hopefully we will hook up one day. i didn't want to give any details so as to not make anyone feel bad, but i couldn't believe those guys from thomas county. there were 6 or 7 boats waiting on them to put in and they just pulled up and blocked both ramps while they TOOK THEIR TIME getting their straps off, putting the cooler in the boat, putting the plug in, deciding which ramp to back down....unbelieveable. the airboat didn't help much either. oh well, at least launching was eventful.
