My Pastor is a fisherman so I told him I’d find him a good spot if he let me borrow the baby Jesus.
That’s not something I’d do lightly but this is about fish.
The prankster game these days is to kidnap the baby Jesus from nativity scenes and take pictures of him in various places. It’s a variation on the kidnapped lawn gnome travel adventure.
Anyway, to combat these pranks some folks, particularly churches, have taken to installing lowjack systems in the baby Jesus. These tracking devices are real expensive but it’s worth it because some of these nativity characters go way way back and folks are very attached to them. Finding Jesus is a big deal.
I’d read that Talltails was fishing today and with the winds forecast at 5 knots I was going too.
I wanted to know where he was going.
I guessed that he could read the tide tables and figured out that there would be enough water to actually fish.
My plan to find him was to stash the baby Jesus in the back of his truck. That way, when I got out of work I could just call my Pastor to get his exact coordinates.
Worked like a charm. After I found his truck (and saved the baby Jesus) I launched, paddled around a bend and there he was, sunburned and sly grinning like he’d been somehow blessed.
I asked him how he’d been doing and he gave a brief summary, several.
We then fished a couple of hours and we both caught decent fish.
Interesting few hours though.
I’m all good with Gods creatures but the bottle nosed pigs that pillaged everywhere we tried to fish were not appreciated. We still did well but I’m not sure the powers that be were pleased with the kidnapping. The pigs really did follow us. I did my best to just think nice thoughts about the beautiful dolphin but it didn’t help. I would say that I threw rocks and oysters at them but if I actually typed it then it could be used as evidence against me.
Speaking of the law. FMP visited us two kayakers. I guess it was a slow day on the water.
I really appreciate that Talltails eased on up to put a shine on them first. Neither of us had kept any fish so that part was easy. Talltails produced his license. Mine? It was at home hanging on the fence, in my lifejacket.
First time in forever I don’t have my pfd. They call in my license and I’m good until 2012. Evidently that made them happy enough to leave it at that. I can’t believe it.
My first real thought after they left was that I’m getting baby Jesus back to the manger, ASAP.
But before I go, just a couple more casts (this is about fish).
With the pigs still following us (yes, bottlenose) we cut across some super skinny water to cut them off.
That tactic worked and resulted in a few more nice fish to set the sun.
Later I returned the baby Jesus to the manger (plastic hut) and all the wise men and Mary were still smiling.
