That article is scary that people can be so ill-equipped. I don't know how he'd expect to catch fish in 100 ft of water without a GPS anyway. I like to know the people I fish with way off shore like that (to know they're safe). If I fished so far out like that, I'd probably get some small raft like the navy pilots have, with a beacon hooked to it. The idea of being down in cold water doesn't appeal to me. I'd want to be on the surface where there's a chance I might be spotted.

We used to catch plenty of fish with a compass and chart well before GPS was invented. Our bottom machine was a lead pipe with soap in it. Knots were tied every 6 feet. You knew how deep you were and what was on the bottom, by what got stuck in the soap.

JT was catching fish before there was braided line, cell phones, cable or color t.v., microwaves, fuel injection, radial tires, there also were no trolling motors.

Come to think of it, that's a good back up skill to have. This guy apparently couldn't call out his coordinates! There's some good lessons in this article for all.

The first head boat I went out on many years ago used an old engine block dragged behind the boat to find hard bottom. Pretty awesome when it hung a rock.

And it was powered by a steam engine and paddle wheel.
