By the way BT, I was talking in general, not aimed at you alone daddy always told folks that they could bring their car to him in one peice ta work on for one price, and double that if they bring it to him in peices cause then ya gotta figure out just what they have lost and how things go back together

I talked to Bubba he charges:

$17.00 if it doesn't need completly taken apart.
$22.00 for most reels taken complety apart, put in washer dried reasembled and properly lubed. It is higher for some reels.

He aslo said if you buy a new reel and you bring it to him the way he lubes they may never need service or it should be after years &
that most new in box reels off the shelf are not well lubed so they get water intrusion and don't last as long as they could.

I fish cheap reels for me the cleaning would cost close to as much as the repair so I replace them as needed if you have nice gear
which some of you do upkeep is worthwhile in my opinion.

The reason it isn't done overnight is he is an EMT but gets the work done well and as quickly as possible.

Its your gear dear do as you wish.

And thats your opinion, Hmmmmmmmmmm Charter Captain & Guide as well as comercial fisherman that owns a reel repair business he just bought even though he has been doing reel repair for years. That is his opinion seems like he might know to me I'm just saying.

What he said is that when he buys a reel to use in a work or personal way he opens them up to see how well they are greased.
While there is grease in the bearings that is about it. He will take a brush and apply a fair amount of grease and to some extent it will keep water out and therefore reduce the need for serviceand prolong the reels life does that seem reasonable to you? It does to me but I buy $20.00 to $35.00 dollar reels and throw them out if they don't act right. What he said makes good sense to me if you don't keep the bearings full of grease on the boat trailer then you have salt water get in and ruin the bearings I am confused why would a reel be different?

It's B.S. No doubt about it. And grease on bearings = a crappy casting reel. If you want a crappy casting reel then "grease" the bearings once over a a period of years.

I am with BD. My reels sell for $150 to $550. Clean them after a fishing trip and you have no problem.
Grease them and cast from the stern to the bow. Ten to 15 trips later you might start casting OK.
