Oil/Gas Mix

Help! Should I try to replace the old oil supply tank now that I am ready to run the motor on my CC rebuild? How do I know if the old one is working OK? Why shouldn't I do away with the system and just pre-mix?

JUST PREMIX AND THEN YOU KNOW IT IS GETTING OIL. I DISCONNECTED THE OIL TANK.

Ive known to many people who have grenaded their motors with oil injection. Take it out..

I don't agree with taking it out!! I have a friend who took his out and that friggin boat smokes like steamtrain. The injector regulates oil flow. I wouldn't do it. There are a bunch of yall who might disagree but I would bet I put as much or more hours on my motor every year than anyone and I have never had a problem with injectors. I am running 4 stroke Yamahas on my Donzi but I have a Mako with an oil injected Mercury with 1200 hours and it still runs like a sewing machine and he injector is still functional.

Thanks for trying to help! Will the motor give a warning if the system quits pumping? If I decide to mix my own, will I have to make any changes other than not using oil tank? What about the small reserve tank under the cover?

My Yamaha has an alarm that is supposed to go off Dabbler. I am afraid if I mix it manually it will smoke like crazy, that happened to a friend of mine. Also he said if he was trolling slow or at idle it would burn too rich and foul out his plugs. I don't know, I am torn too.

It should but the way I figure it is the people that design those motors and systems are a heck of a lot smarter than I am, so who am I to change their design. That and if is under warranty, taking it out would void it.

There is a low oil warning. If the oil in the tank drops below a certain level the warning goes off.

The small tank under the cowl gravity feeds oil to the oil pump. When the oil level in that tank drops it sends a signal to the remote oil tank to pump more oil.

The OX66 motors are fuel injected.I doubt if you can eliminate the oil injection system. I doubt you could ever silence all of the alarms.
There was also mention made about the smoking. If you do manage to eliminate the oil injection it's going to smoke. All outboards with oil injection are designed so they are running on a 100:1 mix at idle. As you increase throttle you also increase the amount of oil injected. If you mix it in the gas it's 50:1 all the time. That's why it smokes and fouls plugs.
All that said, Yamaha has the simplest, most reliable oil injection system on the market. As much time and money as you've put into this restoration I would suggest you take it to your Yamaha service center, have it checked out,and discuss the issue with them.
