I have a 1901 Mako that is a few years old. This boat came with a Mercury 150 Saltwater motor and it has always been a piece of junk. I have had some issues with this motor since it was new. I talked to Roy Duluca in Pensacola who was a Mercury dealer until 2006 and he said these motor are literally junk. That is why they come on the Bass Pro package boats and it explains the killer deal i got on the Mako. This weekend we took the motor off and I want to replace it with a Yamaha or Honda 150 4 stroke. Do you guys think that a 4 stroke 150hp will be too heavy for this 19 foot boat? Should I go to a 115 or 130? I don't care about speed in this little boat at all. Thanks. I personally think that a 115 would be plenty of motor for your 19' Mako. I ran a 115 Optimax on a 18' Kenner and with two adults and gear the boat would run right at 44mph. The Keener and Mako hulls are virtually the same.

If you want to get rid of that motor, you might want to work on your sells tactic.

Natureboy, what kind of problems have you had with the Merc. I have the same motor (if your's is EFI) that came on my 2005 Kenner 1901 from BPS. I have replaced the water pump, but that has been my only problem so far.

The 115 Yamaha weighs 402 pounds. The 150 weighs 464 pounds. I think I'd take the 35 additional horsepower and the 62 pounds.

I'm running a 115 HP Merc EFI Four Stroke on my 19' 6" Sea Pro Bay (2006). The max engine my boat is capable of is a 150 HP. The 115 Merc I have on there now is more than enough and has been very reliable (I've been told the power head for that year engine is a Yamaha, but don't know for sure). You'll have to check your boats documentation for recommended engine sizes, but I don't think a 150 HP will be a problem if you feel you need the extra power. JMHO.

Your prop looks better than mine, I'll give ya $150.00 for it, I even got an aluminum one to give you so you won't have nothing......heck If the pitch is the same as my SS prop now you can have it plus the 150.

What TC said..if the difference in price isn't an issue.

The 115 would be fine but you'll always want more motor.
That boat isn't a shallow draft boat anyway so keep 150 and be done with it.

I don't think I've ever tried to sell anything and went out of my way to tell everybody how bad it was.

Have a 1901 Mako with a Merc 115 4 stroke. Go with the 150. 115 is good on top end, but the hole shot is slow. I may be a little over propped though.

Those motors are trash. Mercury made a big mistake with these. This one is a 2005 with not too many hours either. It is my uncle's boat and I am trying to help him get it right. He is 76 and is tired of it breaking all the time. Him and his old man friends just want to catch speckled perch. My Mako is is a 1999 18ft with a 115 that has 1200 hours on it...no problems. Not a salt water edition though.
