Good news for all you crazy cobia fanatics. A relative of mine caught a cobia behind Shell Island today around 11:00 a.m. He is guessing it to weight 35-40 lbs.

He reported seeing lots of rays and sharks in the surf. Looks like all this warm weather and SE wind have brought the fish in a little early this year.

I heard a report that a charter boat out of Destin caught a cobia on Tuesday, but I do not have any independent information to confirm.

GatorBaiter, I've likely caught 80% of mine on pinfish and the other 20% on eel imitations/colorful nice sized buck-tail jigs.

Interestingly, though, when I've cleaned the cobia almost without exception the #1 stomach content has been crabs and a quick look at the crushers in the roof of the cobes mouths would add to the theory that crabs sure must make up a big portion of their diet. I personally haven't had crabs handy while fishing but bet if you floated one in front of a hungry cobe they would make REAL quick work of it. Just so much easier for me to catch pinfish while I'm on my way to cobia spots and they sure seem eager enough to eat them too :D

FlatCrazy..... The Full Pull out of Destin caught a 42 pounder on the 11th to kick off the local cobia tourney here. Should be a "fun" time on the water this weekend!

I fished for cobia for a few migrations when I first moved down here, but it just gets a little too crazy for me to fish for them around Panama City. Too many idiots that have no respect for others out there on the weekends. I lost a nice fish one time due to another boat moving in right on top of me when they could clearly see that I was hooked up on a fish. It is just not worth the trouble. Kind of reminds me of the original "Jaws" movie when all the idiots run out to catch the shark for the reward.

If I could fish for them during the week it might not be too bad, but seldom do I get to fish Mon-Fri. :smt010

I hear you FlatCrazy! Destin/Ft. Walton is just as bad. I was trying to troll last year and had every charter boat known to man cutting in front of me and one cut my Stretch 30 off zipping behind me. Their idea of Cobia fishing is driving around full throttle waiting for some idiot in the tower to tell them where to turn and they do with no regard to who else is on the water. :smt011 Maybe I will get lucky and find one in the bay this year.
