Anyone get into spanish at St. Marks?

I want to target some Spanish mackerel a couple times soon. I love the non-stop action if they're around because it fits well with my ADD. Are they running in numbers yet? I might try to go this week one day if the wind stays down.

We pulled in a nice 26 inch spanish on Sunday. They're around but it was here and there more than non-stop action. Wind was blowing good and we seemed to only catch fish when we were able to get the anchor to stick and throw some chum out. Pinfish under a float and freelining is how we got our bites. Also floated through a school of blues and one point and had a fun twenty minutes. We were out by the wood post a few miles east of the bird rack. Good luck if you go, looks like more nice weather.

Thanks Rainman. Wow a 26" Spanish is a pig. I was looking at the weather, and in my 13' boston whaler, I don't want to chance 20 knot winds that are predicted all week. arrrggg.

Smart man there.
Hopefully the wind will lay down soon. We fish a 22' Cape Horn Bay, and we will not fish 20 knot winds. Just ain't no fun.

Lordsfisher: Friday. Bigger Spanish taken east around structure in 8 to 12 feet. My guess is that the bigger Spanish are leading the group to our area. Scattered and feeding on bait holding to structure. Should see the bigger schools show up soon.

Harmsway, thanks... Can't wait. I haven't been "stimulated" by Pres. Obama, so I have all week with no work. ha ha But with a 13' boston whaler, I have to wait for perfect conditions. Man, I have to get a bigger boat one of these years. I've never really chummed, but thinking of giving that a try too just for kicks.

For chum I buy the cans of Jack Mackerel and the box mashed potato flakes from the grocery store. Mix in a small bucket and toss some out every now and then. Those flakes really help to spread out and carry the fish oils. Learned that off on of the fishing shows a few years ago.

That's a dang good idea. I was going to do it the hard way.... Slap Chop some fish or use my wife's kitchen food processor. ha ha
