Keaton Beach Magic 3/20 - 3/22

Post by bigblister »

Sr., P and I left Macon at 4:30 Friday morning and headed south. The NOAA forecast looked good for Friday, but looked poor for the weekend – 20 knot winds. We decided to roll the dice.

I nice Keaton Beach sunrise.

We put in around 9:30 and headed to Hole #1. The action was real sporadic and the fish were biting really soft – it seemed like you had to drop the bait on their heads to get a bite. If you hooked up it was probably a keeper. We put 6 nice 17” – 19” trout in the boat from 9 – Noon. The wind died and we decided to go to the red fish hole. We puttered into about a foot and a half of water and started using one of my home made baits. Before I could cast, Sr. had a nice 25” red in the boat. P got into the action and landed a nice 24” red

We headed back out to some deep water to finish up the day and picked up a few more.

Here is the nice result of our day

Saturday we were in the water and heading out around 7:45 and were greeted with 15 knot winds and temperatures around 50 degrees. The fishing started slow in the morning, but really picked up late in the afternoon. We broke out the popping corks and headed out deep. We picked up 14 nice trout which all ranged from 16” – 21”.

Sunday’s weather was a carbon copy of Saturday. We only had a few hours to fish so we headed back to where we ended on Saturday. Popping corks were in the water and the action started again.

B picked up a nice 22” trout on a 3” glow.

We picked up 8 nice trout in 45 minutes. All the fish ranged from 17” – 22”. The highlight of the day was when we were beginning to pack our things to head in and gave the infamous ‘one more cast’. All of a sudden Sr.’s drag begins to scream and I immediately think big shark. But after fighting the fish for 20 minutes and began to second guess myself. The fish pulled us around the bay for what seemed like an eternity, but the Fireline held and I began to see what the culprit was……….

Ol’ Sr. showed off with a 38” red caught in 7 feet of water. He was beautiful. He of course was released unharmed, but he did manage to break our net. The unofficial weight was around 25lbs. – 30lbs.

We fished with 3 other boats and had great success. Here is the pic of all the fish at the end of the trip. There is a 19" flounder on the far right.

Nice bunch of fish! And great report!

Great job.

Were you guys north or south of KB? Just wondering because we fished up that way last week and had a rough day. We got all the way up to Doghead and got zero bites on the deep flats. Caught some later in the day up real tight but nothing from 5-8 feet which we usually do real in in March.

We were mostly to the north, but caught a few south of Keaton around Piney.
