Fished out of St. Marks 4/4. Caught a half dozen or so small trout and a Spanish and then it happened. I was dragging a pinfish behind the boat and my drag went off. I thought Spanish until I looked around and saw a huge swirl around my Cajun Thunder like a dolphin or something. Then it came completely out of the water shaking his big ole head and flaring his big ole gills in a flash of silver and crimson. Immediately cranked the boat to follow and in about 20 seconds he emptied my Stradic 4000. The line tightened and broke right at the hook. The fish appeared to be in the 80 to 100 pound class.
Decided to try one of my Redfish holes on the way in. I was casting a 3/4 ounce gold spoon and I was watching the action as it came toward the boat. Then it happened again. I watched in amasement as the Tarpon inhalled my gold spoon within 3 feet of my outboard. Told the wife to pull the anchor. We followed the fish. This fish also jumped completely out of the water twice and sucked air at least four times as I battled it on my Ambassador for over 20 minutes before she finally parted ways. This fish also appeared to be in the 80 to 100 pound class.
This is why I love to fish, especially in the salt water. You never know what surprises lay out in those waters.
