St. Marks 4/4 and 4/5

Went out to Peters Rock area on Saturday from about 1-4, I saw a ton of boats in close so I decided to give it a try out in deeper waters. Managed 1 keeper trout and a nice sized gar. The weather was great though and it gave me a chance to play around with my new gps. On Sunday we went early and glad we did as the wind was not an issue until around noon. Made my first trip to the St. Marks reef area. With out a fish finder we just pulled up using the gps and tossed anchor. Must of been our lucky day as we got quite a few hits. Only problem is my gear was not ready for the action. First hit and my 12 lb line goes screaming off the real. Yell to my fishing parter to get the lines and anchor up quick, not quick enough. This hit was different than all the rest, he actually made a run and did not stop. The bite we got the rest of the day would go down and break us off on structure. At one point I hooked into a monster. He hit the largest gear I have which was 20lb mono with a 40lb mono leader. Had a good fight for about 15 minutes before he broke me off. To say the least I was very excited and disappointed at the same time. It was a big one. A boat real close to me thought it was a grouper by the way it was fighting. I have not caught a keeper grouper so I can't comment. I learned a lot on Sunday and will be getting a beefier rod and reel. Got all my hits on cut mullet and between 10 and 12, left when the wind and waves pulled our anchor lose around 12:30. Can't wait for next weekend.
