NFGFC Jerry's Bait and Tackle 4/4/09

Smitty, Hunter, and I launched from the Light House @ St. Marks Saturday morning hoping to find a few trout amidst all the stank water that has come with the recent floods. We headed out to our 1st spot and found tons of mullet and redfish but no trout. Smitty quickly put 2 reds in the boat, 1 of which we thought had a good chance of winning the redfish pot and possibly the FSU Club tourney.
After a couple of hours, we began moving here and there to a few spots that have produced in the past, but got no trout love. By 11:00 a.m. we still had no trout. Made another move to some spotty bottom, chunking soft baits and finally began putting trout in the boat. They were small keepers, but we were satisfied with any trout bite we could find. Finally, we had 4 keeper trout in the boat. Nothing near 20" though.
At 12:30 I decided to move to another area, then at the last minute changed my mind and headed back to the area we had fished earlier in the a.m. Lucky move for sure, we began putting good trout in the box steadily until we had to go at 2:30.
Back at the scales, what we thought was just an O.K. stringer of trout turned out to be good enough for 1st place. Go figure, just shows you never know til you go weigh. We ended the day with 12.4 lbs. of trout. We lost the redfish pot in both the NFGFC and FSU Club tourney to Capt. Eric, but our big trout @ 3.92 lbs. was good enough for 2nd place in both the NFGFC and FSU tourneys.
Caught the fish on soft baits, and plugs. We had a great time and appreciate all the congrats we got from everyone. Can't wait til next time.
I'm generally better at taking pics during the fishing day, but Saturday the fishing was just so tough we didn't take the time except for the 1st red Smitty caught. We'll try to do better next time. (Check out Hunter in the background.
Poor fellow stayed up too late Friday night.)
