First, start with the admission I've never owned a stradic... just haven't been willing to pay the price. So I'm not going to knock them from any personal experience, but this said I do have a buddy who has owned a half dozen or so and it seems within a couple of years all have shared the same problem... the loss of the anti-reverse function.

Not looking to pick a fight with the many stradic fans on this site, but truly do wish to know if others have had the exact same problem and if so, if there is a design flaw at fault. I respect the many combined years experience of the board members and have been weighing the purchase of a stradic or two but first thought the anti-reverse question worth asking.

I lose the clicker but have not lost the anti-reverse

My old Stradic occasionaly losses anti-reverse now. Seems to also have a bad roller bearing or something of that nature (sounds like I'm making a margarita). However, it has had a very rough life over the past 5 or 6 years. I am satisfied with the value v. cost and replaced it in my regular arsenal with the same model. I may send it in to see if Shimano can give it an over-haul at some point.

I've had it happen before and once I learned why it happens, I haven't had it happen again because I know how to prevent it. I could show you, but there is no way to explain it on the forum.

Perhaps this would be a topic ( others could be added) for demonstration and discussion at one of the monthly meetings.

As for them being great reels they are I clean and repair all kind of reels I'm not a big fan of Shimano bait casting reels the main reason is they stick to your Arse with the price they are very good reels but the Abu Revo will match the Curado any day and a hole lot better on the wallet but to answer your ? the Stradic for the money is to me as good as they come

I own several Stradics and I have never lost anti-reverse. The problem I have is with the drag adjustment knob knocking the bail when the bail gets opened/closed. Haven't figured out how to fix that however. Stradic was my 'go to' spinner for years and I have 4 of them. Except for the one bail which brushes the drag adjustment knob I have been very, verry satisfied.

However with the new version of the Stradic as well as the price increase I have switched to Diawa Tierras going forward.

Huhhhh? NO way to explain it on the forum? Forgive the engineer coming out in me but I'm a believer most things can be explained... you aren't saying there is magic involved or does it involve something so uncouth it can't be spelled out lest Tom have to police himself? (...hoping the answer isn't you have to pee on the reel!)

I'm just saying, I don't have the vocabulary to explain it without confusing people. TroutTrent could probably do a much better job.

i own many many shimano reels; both baitcaster and spinning. the reason i bought (and i stress that in the past tense because of the explanation below) their reels is because of their customer service. it amazes me how few people know how great shimano's customer service is. if you ever have any problem with a reel, you simply call them or get on their website, print out a repair form and ship the reel to them. they almost always send it back in 3 weeks and it is usually all brand new guts when they do (on all their spinning stuff below a stradic like a sahara, they just send you a brand new refurbished reel). the last reel i sent in back in march, i noticed they started charging a $30 fee. so i sent the check in. the cost was only $12 and they sent me a refund check back instead of just saying it was $30 and keeping the money. they used to not charge anything. either way, when you factor in how rough saltwater is on reels, you use a reel for 3, 4 or 5 years with it working great (if you take care of them), $30 is well worth it to get essentially a brand new reel. you can't beat the service they give and it keeps you from buying a brand new reel every so many years.

they are a great company and the stradic, as well as their other reels, are great reels.

just some thoughts.

I'll try, in the anti-reverse bearing there are fins that hold the bearings that will not let them spin but one way if these fins get worn or any oil or grease on them it will cause the bearing to spin backwards. you will have to take the bearing out and clean each one of bearings and make sure the fins all have a spring like action so they are pushing the on the bearings. you will have to look at the bearing when it apart and you will see the springing action I'm talking about. Hope that helps

Hope no one thinks I'm seeking to attack Shimano... not at all, promise. But am sincere in having had the friend lose anti-reverse on multiple reels and from Tom and TroutTrent it sounds like the problem, even if user caused, is a valid concern. Promise, just trying to be as educated as possible before spending what I believe to be big bucks And yes, you can translate that last comment as equating to me being a bona-fide cheapskate

Thanks Jeff. Yep, old grease was my problem. Once I got it cleaned out and started using 3 and 1 oil on it after every breakdown, it never did it again.
