04/07/09 3:30PM EDT - Near-record flooding on the Suwannee River will result in road closures on I-10 and US-90 beginning Wednesday. Other roads also impacted. Click here for details.
Due to all the recent heavy rains in South Georgia and North Florida, the Withlacoochee, Alapaha, and Suwannee Rivers are currently at or forecasted to reach near-record flood levels not seen since 1948.
The current forecast for the Suwannee River at Ellaville, which is where US-90 and Interstate 10 cross the river, calls for a peak crest of 66 feet on Saturday.
* US-90 bridge closes at 62.6 feet… which is forecast to occur Wednesday morning.
* Interstate-10 bridge closes at 64 feet… which is forecast to occur Thursday morning.
Alternate Routes North of I-10:
- FL-6 at Blue Spring is already closed due to flooding.
- FL-150 at Bellville is already closed due to flooding.
- FL-145 at the GA State Line is already closed due to flooding.
- US-84/221 between Quitman and Valdosta, GA is closed due to flooding.
Alternate Routes South of I-10:
- CR-250 at Dowling Park is closed at 56.7 feet… forecasted to occur early Saturday morning.
- FL-51 at Luraville is expected to close sometime on Saturday.
- US-27 at Branford is expected to close sometime on Sunday.
- US-19/98/27A at Fanning Springs may close sometime late Sunday or Monday.
Should all these crossings close simultaneously, the only recommended detour route will be via Tifton, GA. US-319 from Tallahassee to Tifton, GA, then I-75 South, or vice versa. Under normal traffic conidtions, this would add 95 miles and 2 hours to your trip. However, consider that this detour will also include all the extra traffic from the closed roads. This may add as much as 3 hours to what should only be a 1.5 hour trip between Tallahassee and Lake City.
Note that once each road closes, it may be closed for up to one week to allow time for the water to recede and conduct road and bridge inspections. Possible damages and repairs would certainly extend this duration.

The rivers are falling around here, but they have sure been high. I've seen some areas flooded more, but not the river flood plains.
