12v to 24v conversion

I recently upgraded my trolling motor from 12 to 24v. I have purchased 2 new batteries and hooked everything up, but want to make sure everything is wired correcyly before heading to Econfina on Friday. I will not have time to do a in water test before I go. So here is what I have:

2 wires from trolling motor to 3-blade twist lock plug (Minn Kota)
3-blade receptacle (minn Kota) with 3 wires (red 8awg, orange 6awg, and black 8awg)
2 brand new Delco Voyager batteries
2 - 50A circuit breakers

I thought I knew how this should be wired, but after reading several forums online they have me second guessing. Can someone please confirm for me the layout at the battery? I do not have any switches involved.

+ of bat one to - of bat two / +of bat two to - of bat one. Series wiring.

So as far as the 3 wires from the receptacle... orange wire to + battery one, red to + battery two, black wire to - of which battery???

If you have a 24 volt trolling motor and no switch, there will only be 2 wires going to the plug. Using the diagram Tom posted, wire the red, blue and black. Leave the orange wire out. The orange wire is for 12/24 volt trolling motors. I'm sure your new trolling motor is 24 volts. I haven't seen a 12/24 volt trolling motor in years.

I'm guessing you have this.

You may want to spend a little more and get this (Marineco brand)

The Marineco system requires 4 wires from the batteries, but holds up much better than the standard receptacle. I've melted 2 of the standard receptacles because of poor connection.

One more question. I know I need a circuit breaker on the + of battery 1. Do I need a breaker on battery 2 also even though it is wired in series? If so, should it be on the + of battery 2 even though that is just a jumper between batteries?

One circuit breaker should be sufficient, as long as the circuit "breaks" in the event of a problem. IMO

One breaker close to the battery 1 connection. Make sure the current rating is high enough to allow for the draw of the TM to prevent tripping under heavy use.
