Was looking for a good excuse to buy a new rod and reel combo and said to myself, " I know, I'll tell the wife it's for HER, she won't get mad if I buy one for HER!" Bought it Thursday and it worked like a charm, she was thrilled. :D

SOOO...take the family out yesterday, (Sat.) on the flats. The plan was to get out real early and try to catch the very end of the outgoing tide, then hit it hard all day with the hope the late afternoon bite would turn on with the next outgoing.

Got the boat in at first light, got to a spot, and she proceeds to make her very first catch with her new outfit, a 26in BRUISER of a trout. :o

Guess I'll never get my hands on THAT rod.

She then proceeded to kick my butt for the remainder of the day, caught fish all day, everywhere (3ft - 10ft), on (almost), everything. Curiously enough the one thing that drew virtually NO attention was live pinfish which we had out all day, up to 3 at a time even. The problem was she was catching keeper trout while I was catching shorts, catfish, and lady fish. I did manage 1 for the box. (16in) She added a 17, and a 16, and just to rub it in, boats a 21 at the end of the day. Caught about 15 shorts between us. The kids were pretty wiped out by around 4:30 so we did not get to that anticipated late afternoon bite. All in all a nice day out.

Thanks to all for their patience at the ramp as the wife showed a bit of rookie jitters as she backed in the trailer.

Great report! I have some family coming down to fish next weekend from Macon, Ga. They don't fish much but are staying at shell island marina. What were you using for bait and what area , depth were you in? Any help will be appreciated. I dont fish inshore much and mostly at econfina when I do. Thanks Carla :smt006

I am new to fishing saltwater flats and bays and it appears I need help. I put in at the lighthouse yesterday and spend about 6 hours with little luck. I should say no luck because all I got was 4 cats and one trout that was only about 12in. I put in around 3 and headed east. When I first went out there were probably 20 or so boats within a mile strech of the coast line. At about 5pm there was only about 5 of us. Does anyone have any suggestions of where to go? I was using shrimp with popping corks and varied my depth from 3-8ft. Still no luck. Please help!!

Sounds like you lost a new rod and reel, but gained a permanent partner. She probably won't let you go without her again.

Anytime you get your wife catching fish ... only good stuff can result.
