Tiller Problems

Post by Joe »

Hi Guys, I have a Yamaha 2001 HPDI 150. The tiller is not working when going down on the center console dependably, up is great. The second switch at the motor works flawlessly. Are there separate control relays for each switch location? I had one go out on a mercury that had the same symptoms but it only had one switch at the console.

Thanks in advance! :smt010

I'm assuming you are referring to your trim and tilt switch. If so, there is only one set of relays. You either have a bad switch or a bad connection. I would start under the cowling. Look in the pan, on the starboard side of the motor. The trim and tilt wires have push together connectors. Make sure they are connected and making good contact. If those connections are good, pull the switch out of the handle on your console control box. You should be able to jump across the wires on the back side of the switch. If jumping across the wires makes the trim work you need a new switch.

Thanks Tin Can. I was not aware that you can take apart the handle to get to the switch. Wish me luck.
