The "red stuff" is water proof grease and suitable  I use Amsoil Synthetic in the foot and in the motor "change the foot oil about every 400 hours and the motor oil every 200 hours" :smt004 or roughly foot once a year and motor twice a year

:o Man that's a lot of hours in a year. My moter is 2 yrs old and might have 30-40 hours on it. Don't get to fish on average 1 or 2 times a month. Where get the Amsoil? :-D

I get mine from Car Quest "because my nephew works there" It is available at most Auto parts stores and many Walmart type stores  but be warned, it aint cheap :smt009 but the longevity of it makes it worth it "I use it in the car and truck and change the oil every 20,000 miles" :smt004

If you see oil/grease under the Quicksilver brand, then that is Mercury products. You may have better luck finding it under that name than the Mercury name. At Wal-Mart they sell some Quicksilver products such as 2-cycle oil, and if you look on the back its made by Mercury.
