Crooked Island 5-16-09

Picked my father up before daylight and launched the boat at Davis Beach around 6:00. The plan was to catch a bunch of white baits and live bait fish the morning. Got on the front deck with my net and told my father to throw the pump over the rail to start filling the tank. He looks around and asks me where the tank is...
So, no live bait fishing for us.
Set up to drift some flats in the main sound. I was throwing top water (super spook) and my father tied on a CT/GULP!. I caught lady fish while he caught trout. Fished all my favorite spots and it seemed that the ladies throughout the sound had acquired a taste for whatever bait I was throwing. I think my father only caught two or three. I bet I caught 20.
Fished til the tide stopped at 12:30. Total was 5 legal trout. My father caught 4 of them on the stinky stuff, one for me on a skitterwalk. Big fish was only 22". Other 4 were all between 15.5" and 18". Never looked for any reds.
I am going back there next weekend with a friend but I will remember to load my tank. I love fishing Crooked Island, but for some reason we always do much better there using live LY's or white baits than artificials.
