Econfina 5-30-2009

Post by Tom Keels »

Quick and dirty report...

Left the river with Frank, Frank's son Ben, and my Daughter about 8:30 am. Picked up the pinfish trap and put 30 pins in the boat. Seas were a little sloppy to begin the day but eased out throughout the day.

Got to the first spot and the fish were chewin'. We put a couple of good size keepers in the box, and some 23" fish in the livewell.

Next spot was on fire too. Kalianna got her biggest grouper ever at 27"

Frank gets another good one and I add another 2 the live well.

We hit 1 more spot and round out the limit with 5 gags on ice and 3 in the livewell. Decided to back dive the second spot and try to cull the livewell fish.
It makes a good show on the bottom machine.

After 1 dive by Frank and 1 by me we have culled all the livewell fish with 27-30" fish and added some hogs to the mix. We then went looking for more hogfish.

I dropped Frank on a small spot to look for some hogs and idled over to check out a weedline. On the way there I ran over a massive show. Went and picked up Frank and dropped him on the new found spot. Ended up being money and Frank filled our limit of hogfish and told stories of 30" gags so friendly you could pet them. It's amazing how they act when they know you aren't hunting them.

Only bad thing about the day was hitting a rock 2 miles from the mouth and tearing up a lower unit. Idled in the rest of the way. Could have come in at 11 am with the limit of gags but it sure was nice to get back in the water.

Tally for the day:

8 gags 27-32"
10 hogfish to 18"

2 miles straight out from the tripod. Apparently it is known to several locals.

Vis was a hazy 20 feet in under 30 feet. 35 feet was a clear 25+. There is a color change at around the 30 foot mark going south.

That @#$% got my new stainless prop about 3-4 years ago. I didn't have the GPS with me, so no way to mark it  Luckily, I was trolling and didn't hit it too fast. It was sitting about 10" under the surface when I smacked it. Sorry to hear you guys found it, but at least you got some nice fish

Waiting on the shop to let us know what the damage is first. If it is a total replacement we are calling the insurance. Not sure what the deuctible is. Never made a claim before.
